Hi guys,

Since my bike was last stolen I now keep it locked in the garden every night, what would you put on your insurance for where do you keep the bike? I'm yet to see a "locked garden" option on the list!

Also how would you define a "locked compound"?

Locked compound I would class as a private gated car park or something similar.

In the garden is usually 'off the road'.

Wouldn't that just come under back garden or plain garden, then list the security features that you have on the bike.

Been a while since I did an insurance quote but I'm sure garden is an option or off the road.

I found the same. So i just put 'kept on the drive'.

You could phone them up and ask what they think you should put. No come back then, if you need to claim.

My bike was covered, alarmed and had 2 locks on it in the back garden, which was locked. So pretty secure.

But as you say this does not appear on the insurance forms!

Simple as that really.

Entirely depends on what options their system understands.

tis bollocks, they give better discounts for garaged bikes, but statistics show more bikes are stolen from garages than not

I keep mine in a locked garden and decided to go for the locked garage option. Insurers specifically stated that if it is stolen at my home from anywhere else my insurance is invalid. Silly me eh? But a chance I'm willing to take as I know the bike is very secure ..... Name and address witheld

I asked swinton this last year and she said that if it has a locked gate then it's a locked compound.

Do not go out of your way to be honest with an insurance company as they will not do the same for you.

True, but dont leave yourself wide open to losing a claims value.

Having said that, the communal ' garden ' is walled and has a large locked gate ... my interpretation is its a locked compound, and it does give afaik much better quotes that off the road ...

I would not be surprised if in the small print, is a bit about how they dont pay out on locked compound, if they deem it a garden Thumbs Down Rolling Eyes

TPO now, 50 quid per annum, so fuck um. Rolling Eyes

MCE said this the other day, before giving me a quote of double anywhere else.

I went for the locked garage option even though its kept in a brick shed.
Its locked and as I now keep the bike in it, it can now be classed as a garage so fook off insurers. Middle Finger

I haven't noticed a lot of difference between garage and off road in my quotes. Maybe it depends more on the area you live though.

I took no chances and sent the insurance company inside and outside photos of where I keep my bike.

When I lived in Oxford I kept my bike in a private gated car park with CCTV and 24 hour staff.

I wasn't sure what to put on my quote so I called an insurance company. Apparently, since I wasn't the the only person with a key to the car park, this counts as leaving the bike on a public road. Rolling Eyes
