Depends on the design.

Copper will deform to create a seal as will 'alloy' (Which alloy) If you mean aluminium then it will also deform.
Go with the OEM spec.

Some manufacturers use a metalized fibre too.

On the CD200T that I refurbished I used the ones that came in a top-end gasket set which were a copper type tubular crush washer.They deform easily but cannot easily be reused - but in the past I have left the old one in place and put a new one on top,if only because the first one was not that easy to remove.
