Have a read of this, how plausible do you think it really could be?

I think this is probably a dramatization. “Based on a true story”, so to speak.

Probably when he developed problems with his suspension he decided to frivolously pursue a mod to his vehicle. I don’t think he did so without the support of civilization.

and 12 days with limited water?!

I guess the part I really don’t like, is how he supposedly did this all with a hacksaw. I’d think he’d need a hundred blades, and his arms would fall off after having to cut all that, as if he could ever even cut a single hardened shaft with a hacksaw

anyway here you go copy and pasted:

----------------------------------------------------------

The original story is in French and the Google translate is very rough. Please forgive us if we don’t get this completely accurate.

While traveling through the desert somewhere in north west Africa in his Citroen 2CV , [Emile] is stopped, and told not to go any further due to some military conflicts in the area. Not wanting to actually listen to this advice, he decides to loop around, through the desert, to circumvent this roadblock.

After a while of treading off the beaten path, [Emile] manages to snap a swing arm on his vehicle, leaving him stranded. He decided that the best course of action was to disassemble his vehicle and construct a motorcycle from the parts. This feat would be impressive on its own, but remember, he’s still in the desert and un-prepared. If we’re reading this correctly, he managed to drill holes by bending metal and sawing at it, then un-bending it to be flat again.

It takes him twelve days to construct this thing. But there’s not just a swing arm that’s broken, there’s a frame beam broken too (not sure about the exact term, one of the 2 girder of the chassis).

He’s not far away but he has a lot of tools and other hardware that could be stolen if he leaves them unattended.

I may well be wrong, but...

I'm sure these cars are font wheel drive so how is he making the rear wheel spin, the gearbox output is obviously not getting to the front.
Maybe he's got the output running directly onto the rear tyre to make it turn but it doesn't look like it's being butchered so can't see it being done.

I'm calling bullshit...

Not saying it wouldn't be possible... but in 12 days in a desert with just a hacksaw... bollocks.

"Managed to drill holes by bending metal, sawing it then un-bending it to be flat" - if you found metal weak enough to bend with your bear hands like that, it'd probably snap.

I was just thinking that.

No drive shafts and seems to be a standard rear wheel at the rear.
Says something about maximum 20kph.
Only possible thing I could think would be a friction drive - looks like there could be something on the left shaft exit, but it's not clear.

It was very good of him to take the time to pose for a photo in his undies as well. I mean, he must have been knackered but he still thought about all those people who would need to know how he did it. Very Happy

From a site I found on googe:
Quote:
Informations from the pictures :
- The chassis was cut to keep only the central part. Front and back extensions were dismissed
- The direct transmission. The brake is at the top of the rear-wheel. Due to the transmission rotation you have to drive in rear-gear, maxing at 20km/h
- The saddle was made from the end of the rear bumper covered by the felt of the dashboard and held in place with orange duct tape
- The right-drum is blocked so that the differential distributes all the power to the left one
- The front wheel is the only one to have a suspension
- The handlebar is made from the main piece of the jack. On that are fixed the gears and electrics command
- The immatriculation plate is necessary but didn’t prevent a fine for non-conform vehicule importation
- The gas inlet pipe is used as kickstand

That makes sense as it seems to have in-board drum brakes.

The start of this video seems to have the same bike running:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BiuHxf565kw

I still don't understand why he needed to do this because his tools and hardware might be stolen if left - why not spend a little time either repairing it and limping home or hiding it then walking back.
Now he'll have to leave his stuff for some time and have more trouble getting them back I suspect - can't just get someone to repair it so he can drive them back.

I remember seeing this a few years ago. It seems to be legit and was featured in 2CV magazine. The guy was called Emile Leray, it happened in 1993 and his story (while a bit bonkers) is fairly convincing:

https://chameaudacier.free.fr/moto2.html

(my French is little better than GCSE, but google translate does a fairly good job).

I call bullshit.

If I was in his "fictional" position and valued the contents of a 2cv more than my life I'm sure I'd find a way to support the broken strut and limp it home that would take less than 12 days.

It's the desert, hide it and come back for it. Chop all the body off of the chassis and use it as a trolley to push your junk home. Bury your tools nearby and walk home etc etc etc would all be quicker than 12 days, plus however long it takes to drive that "bike" back to a cafe for a chardonnay and a croissant.

As above, it's probably some arty type whose most recent piece was "a bike made in the desert".

You don't when you're out on a road trip in foreign lands?

The guy was a very accomplished mechanic who was used to not asking for help, he had more supplies than the English article suggests and probably though it was just cool.

It's only a few steps up from the bcfer who put his new bike in the Clio. There are other options and it's done as much for the heck of it as necessity, but if you read the site and search for the guy's name it certainly appears genuine. The English journalists dramatise the perils, the French original does not and is written in a way that shows he knows the absurdity of what he's done.

Full on reddit copy paste huh? You even ripped the line about the hacksaw and a sore arm. Word for word. Shame on you.
