I'm looking at a bike for sale on Gumtree and the advert states 'HPI Clear'.

There is also a spare wheel included in the sale.

Am I being too cynical, or does this seem odd to anyone else?

If so its the used nicked jobbie Gumtree users specialise in.

If you don't believe him - do your own HPI check on it, that'll tell you if (or more likely, WHEN) it was stolen Smile Thumbs Up

I have a spare wheel for my bike so not that odd.

Usual checks need to be made. Even though it's a pain actually ask to see the V5 and actually check the engine and frame numbers. You might have to do a google first so you know where they should be on the actual make of bike.

Gumtree has a poor reputation but with eBay charging so much in fees now I suspect honest Joe Public is also using it.

I've sold using Gumtree a few times. Of course you get the couple of email scams but it really isn't that difficult.

You don't get r@ped on fees and I ended up selling my CBR through Gumtree even though it was on eBay aswell.

Gets a bad rep, but it's definitely better than eBay for selling.

This is what I was thinking. And the spare wheel being replacement parts bought to repair the bike to sell it.

But as I said, maybe I am being too cynical.

I don't mind travelling there to collect the bike if it's a good'un. But I do object to wasting my time on crash repaired bikes.

Then call him and ask him straight out. You won't get a feeling for whether he's a wrong 'un or a nice old geezer by worrying away at it here.

Called him; seems pretty genuine.

Born again biker. Bought the bike a week ago. Scared himself silly on it so he's selling it.

The spare parts came with the bike when he bought it.

He has someone coming to view it today. I left my number with him, but I'm not expecting a call back.

Well what lesson have we learnt?

If you find a decent bike on Gumtree - Instead of asking a load of internet forum people for their opinions, phone them up and see! ?Otherwise you'll keep missing out.

Smile Bad luck though mate - There are more out there though.

I've bought most of my bikes through Gumtree, and always sell them through there too (often at too low a price in retrospect!), but this seems to go both ways as my last couple of bikes I got at a good £200 under book price which on a bike that should have been c.£1k is a decent saving.

As said, next time just give the seller a call. You can generally suss out whether they're a joker or not within a couple of minutes. I always run my own HPI checks though, and following a bad experience with a car a little while back always check that the MOT info is legitimate too using the free directgov website.
