This morning I did my theory test in a sea of 18 to 25 year olds making me feel like a real old fart. Even the guy at the desk joked

"I bet you haven't done one of these for a while. Did they even have cars back then?"

Found the test interesting to say the least. At least 2 of the questions I got we exactly like ones on the (pretty much word for word)https://www.direct.gov.uk/en/diol1/doitonline/doitonlinemotoring/dg_4017669

The case study style question threw me a bit at first, I read the left side and then looked at the question and though wtf. It went something like:

"
Before setting off you check your oil.

You drive along, past a sign with 2 old people in it one with a stick.

You pass an accident on the road where a motorcyclist is unconscious
It starts raining and your headlight isn't working"

Then the question was :

"What colour shoes were you wearing"

Well, ok not quite.. more like "What other checks did you do before starting your journey."

Since, as far as I was concerned we'd moved on from the checking.. the question seemed out of place. Thankfully I'd just done a Mikrotik (unrelated to bikes) - wireless engineer exam which is written by non native English speakers and suffers as a result so I was in the right state of mind to go back a look again at wtf they were asking.

Odd if you ask me. (yes I know you didn't Wink )

I hated the hazard perception test.

The driver of the vehicle I was "in" drove like a dick. Seriously, once they even drove faster to cause an issue. I almost shouted at the screen a couple of times. Also, they seemed to manage to get all the most inconsiderate and idiotic drivers in the universe into one set of clips. There's the constant worry about clicking too much and pretty much everything going on was a potential hazard.

What I did like was that they tell you what you got wrong, or at least the areas you need to brush up on. Unlike the Mikrotik exam where you just get a %age mark and a pass/fail but you don;t get told the bits that you got wrong. I firmly believe that telling people areas they need to look at and improve on is a better mechanism for learning.

I would also question the relevance of stopping distances in feet or meters. It means little to most people. How many car lengths should I imagine to make this safe seems like a better way of doing that.

Passed with 46 and 63

Hazard perception:

Double clip scored 8
6 clips scored 5
5 clips scored 4
1 clip scored 3
1 scored 2

Would like to have been able to review this and see what I'd missed.

I also discovered that the car park opposite doesn't open until 8am - not useful when your appointment is at 8 and you need to be there 15 minutes early. Mad

Theory test is nonsense when you already have a licence, particularly the hazard-awareness bit where you spot the hazard and click it before they've even opened the scoring window.

FWIW I was 28 when I did mine. They didn't do theory tests when I got my car licence.

Correct answer - (in Alan Carr accent) "Ones that matched the bike of course!"

Correct answer:

(1) Got fags.
(2) Had a piss.
(3) Given wife a plausible excuse for disappearing for the day.

Agreed it is a bit of a joke to us old gits. I'm sure some of the HPT bits are rigged, I definitely saw the same burgundy-panniered touring bike in at least two clips.

Do you not have to do CBT before you can do the theory?

In any event, well done!!

As Andy said, no. I did check before booking it Very Happy - I did it as more of a test for myself. I didn't tell anyone but basically had decided that if I didn't get it first time after driving a car for 25 years then I wouldn't continue with learning to ride a bike. Lucky for me I passed. Smile
