How soon after draining a petrol tank completely will the inside of the tank start to rust? Is it very quick, or can the tank be drained for a couple of days no problems?

Just ask yourself when Honda manufacture a tank do they have a man that rushes down the production line rapidly installs it onto a waiting bike and then instantly fills it with petrol.?

Or does it spend time (sometimes considerable) in the parts warehouse and is picked when required. ?

Its how its stored I would think is the most important issue.

Steel tanks will rust if they are allowed to gather condensation-for example in a shed or outside garage.

Should be ok for a couple of days, especially in the warm weather.
Might be worth leaving cap open, maybe not!

For any lengthy period best bet would be to close it up (bung fuel/vacuum/breather holes) with a bit of clean engine oil inside. Then give a good shake to coat the inside. Leave closed until needed.
