PostPosted: 20:49 - 26 May 2012    Post subject: Putting a bike in self storage Reply with quote

I'm going to be away for 7 weeks this summer, and I need somewhere to put my bike (since I'm moving residences the day AFTER I leave, annoyingly).

Only annoying thing is all self storage places I've spoken to ask me to drain the fuel and oil from the bike. But the only way I can get to them is on the bike, so I would have to drain it there.

Does anyone know any self storage companies that don't ask you to do this?

I've been trying to get in touch with the landlord of our next residence to ask if I can put my bike in the garage to leave it there before we officially move in, but she said she'd ask her husband, and hasn't got back to me for a week.

After 7 weeks of non-use would you expect a bike to have problems starting up/running?

Get petrol nearly empty, strap an oil-drain pan to the back + a petrol holder for the dregs, ride over, drain it of fluids at kerbside, bung it in?

I'm just not sure how to drain the petrol really. I don't think there's a fuel drain pipe on the YBR. I could siphon it?

Just put a cover over it and leave it on campus in a secure place.

Wouldn't bother putting it in storage for just 7 weeks personally.

Tell them it is drained, they will know no better.

I'm pretty wary of leaving it in public. I'd also have to ask my university special permission to leave my bike there!

However that does raise a good idea; some of the halls have special bike sheds that you need a campus ID card to get into. If I could convince one of the staff to let me keep my bike there and approve my card to let me in and out of the bike shed that would be perfect.

Of course the best solution is to get it into the garage of our next house but I don't think that's going to be possible.

This is also a possibility I suppose. Wink [/quote]

Where are you located?

If you are close I can provide you with a place to lock your bike in a garage behind a car and motorhome. Thumbs Up

You're also welcome to leave it on my drive for the duration, live in a little village just outside Oxford so maybe a bit easier to get to (and get back to reading) than Paddy, although probably less secure. I can chain my bike to it overnight and weekends.

Very kind offers, thank you. I may see if I can take you up on it if my landlady continues to give me no response or I fail to negotiate a (much) lower self storage price! I can't leave the bike on the street, I checked the police website once and apparently there had been 1500+ crimes in my area of Reading in the past month.

This place really is a pit Rolling Eyes

Can't really give you any specific help as not in your area.

However, I know in York there's a self storage company that has containers on the outside that they let out. These are suitable for bike storage and as far as I know no draining of fluids is needed, unlike their inside storage. Obviously being metal boxes outside these will be subject to some condensation. Therefore you'd have to arrange suitable corrosion protection for your bike (e.g. oily rag stuffed up exhaust at the least up to putting it in a fully enclosed sealed bag at the other extreme). Maybe there are such storage places wherever you are.

At the least you might find it beneficial to put in the petrol something like the Putoline Fuel Stabiliser (like this - click here).

Being in Reading, there's a few on here in Reading with garages; if you were to offer the storage fees say, I'm sure you could find someone that would help you out (though I can't speak for them of course, as I now live 200 miles away.)

For 7 weeks storage, don't be daft.

FFS, I leave my bike for 4/5 months at a time and do nothing to it. When I come home I turn the key and press the tit. The worst thing that has happened is I need to charge the battery first.

What sort of bike is it, and how much are the storage company wanting to charge you?

Im in Surrey, I have a very secure lock up at the bottom of my garden where my bike lives. There is absolutely no possible access to it and you are more than welcome to store your bike there.

Oh and also - I used to rent a Garage and a half of someone that had a block just around from Ride in Tyres.

The 'half' garage was because he was using the other and I think that one sometimes had some damp on the floor - but not an issue for a bike.

Haven't got his number anymore I don't think, but can get you his address - he hasn't got any advertised, but may well be happy to do let you use the other half of the one he's using (if that's still the case) for a reasonable price.

I guess if you fancy trusting a stranger you could dump it in my garage also, down near Winchester so not hugely far, but there are probably others nearer.

I've got space in my alarmed garage your welcome to store your bike in but, I'm in London so you have about a 40 mile trip to drop it off.

It's a YBR 125, storage company are charging me between £140 and £200 (I've got quotes from several). As a student, perpetually in my overdraft, I can't afford this Embarassed

Had lots of offers, this is clearly a kind community. Thumbs Up While I'm obviously wary of letting a 'stranger' look after my bike for 2 months it's better than leaving it unattended on campus, especially with drunk students about, even if it is in a rickety wooden bicycle shed.

I should warn you I am a drunk student. If you took me up on my offer it would be at my home address though. But then I'd probably be in residence there. Drunk. Laughing Mr. Green
