Planning an impromptu 2-night trip tomorrow to the Dumfries & Galloway area.

Any tips for good roads, places to see and places to stay? Looking at B&B/Lodges rather than camping.

Wish I could be more helpful here... as I think I'm the only person on BCF who actually lives in D&G... lol


There is Premier Inn and Travel Lodge just off the "Notorious A75" as you enter Dumfries from the east, although there is a lot of pubs which have rooms for staying in, no idea if they need to be pre-booked etc.

Best place for petrol will be Tesco's @ Cuckoo Bridge https://goo.gl/maps/6eUt - Looks rather daunting on the map but it's quite easy to get to, as long as you know how to get to White Sands "The Sands" in the heart of Dumfries. Across the bridge and your going right, down Glasgow Street

Places to see... Not sure to be honest..

Saint Mary's Loch between Moffat and Selkirk (A708 - Quite a nice road to ride along) https://goo.gl/maps/ckN1
Seems to be a pattern with Water emerging here... but I don't know much other than that really..

Two road spring to mind as being particularly fast and twisty:

A712 The Queens Way through the New Galloway Forest
A714 Newton Stewart to Girvan

However, most roads are good fun as long as you avoid the dreaded A75 as this is congested with ferry traffic and scamera vans

Go there. It isn't far from Dumfries I don't think and they have ridiculously nice ice cream. We go there just to eat several bowls of ice cream when we're visiting my aunt at Dumfries.

We ended up doing 630 miles over the weekend, almost 300 of them being exploring the "good" roads on Saturday!

Stayed at the Galloway Activity Centre on Loch Ken in the end which was nice and central.

Had a wonderful time, it's a lovely and much overlooked part of the country imo.
