This is the state of my gloves after just one weeks use.
https://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh10/torty_2008/IMG_0159.jpg
At this rate they're not going to last the summer so I decided to take them back to J&S Watford for a replacement/refund.
Manager refused to do anything about it and said 'It looks like you've had an off'.
He said he'd get into trouble if he changed them or refunded my money based on what he'd seen and he'd have to get a second opinion so he took a photo and said he'd ring me tomorrow.

I was going to buy boots from them today. Middle Finger Middle Finger Middle Finger Middle Finger Middle Finger

That hardly looks like you've had an off! Just looks like your gloves are decomposing!

Joke isn't it? Confused

Wouldn't mind you lot recommending some things to say to this guy if he does bother his arse to ring me tomorrow.
Nothing that'll get me locked up though. Laughing

there is no way it looks like you had 'an off', the wear is located purely to that one area!

It's just what that material does. I have no idea why manufacturers think it'd be tough enough for use on a bike. I bought a set of AlpineStars gloves, just before the BBQ last year, and this is what they look like now, after only summer use:
https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8162/7279135452_b751ac982b_z.jpg

It'll look really rough for the first few weeks, until the stuff that's loose comes off, at least. It'll start to settle down after a couple of months, but it's not exactly confidence-inspiring material.

No way that looks like an off - an off would have a direction to the abrasion, i.e. like it had been combed from front to back, that is clearly from small movements in various directions (i.e. general use/wanking).

It just looks like the material is made from compacted overlying fibres that have pilled. Is it leather underneath?

So I haven't quite perfected my riding style yet, still trying to remain rubber side down and riding with my tongue out!

Well as you'd expect, no phone call. I think I'll just keep these gloves for the shit weather and get some lighter gloves.

qb78, get yourself back to J&S and ask to see this guys boss. Then when you speak to his boss mention that you have trading standards number and you are ringing them when you get home. But mention that you wanted to give (them) J&S the chance to rectify the situation first, before going further.

Just say that you'd expect the gloves to at least last a summer.

I did think about you using the not fit for purpose reason, but they are still fit for purpose, albeit they are falling to bits before your very eyes. So unfortunately you can't go down that road.

What brand are the gloves and what did they cost, just out of interest.

I bought some cheapish summer gloves made by Lookwell and they have lasted me 6 years. Just had the one off while wearing them, and they are still fine.

Hope you have a result with J&S.

I would say the gloves are of poor quality and you have a right to return them using your statutory rights.

Thanks for all the advice people.
I'll get on to them tomorrow with some quotes from here. Wink
I'm still unsure how I'm gonna get around this 'you've had an off' thing. Confused
The only thing I can think of is to show them my bike and the rest of my gear which is all still mint.
Its a bit of a pain that its a 40 mile round trip. Thumbs Down

They're Frank Thomas Storm Aqua.

For the record, how much did you pay for those gloves?
£25?

You are entitled to a replacement as the wear looks much worse than just one weeks use.
It does look like you had an off though...

You might be pushing it to get a replacement.
But push it anyway. Obviously the retailer, was his name Del Trotter, knows how much quality is built into the shite he's peddling so he will learn to sell better stuff or face the wrath of pissed off bikers.

I only buy Heinz Geriatric gloves or Alpine-Stars and have never had a glove fail like that. One HG glove had the velcro come loose after a couple of days but was replaced with a new pair without a hint of quibble when I returned them.
I do not buy end-of line from the oddment bins either.
If you can afford it, save up and buy a pair of gloves for £100 or more they'll easily last more than two or three years easy-peezey.

I got a pair of Spada gloves from Xmas (cost was £45), the sticking came apart on the index finger after a few weeks. Person that brought them for me as a gift hadn't kept the receipt, I'll buy a better pair when I'm riding a bigger bike.

Yours should have lasted alot more than they have Shocked

The irony here is that we have a Hein Gericke store quite close to us in Luton.

Also, Flitwick Motorcycles (where I bought my bike) is only about 12 and a half miles away (via some lovely twisty roads) but I just thought yeah, big store, loads of choice, get everything in one hit and maybe get a discount, which I did.

To be honest, the gloves seem well put together with decent knuckle protection and they're quite comfortable.
Its just a shame they don't look like they're gonna last.

No reason why you can't print out this thread - it shows the opinion of multiple unrelated people, shows how far reaching a poor decision can be and it has pictures of other, more expensive gloves of a similar material doing a similar thing.

Frank Thomas is a J&S brand now, so they are the "manufacturer". If they won't stand behind their own products, that speaks volumes.

Ok, spoke to the manager this morning mentioning the fact that I can prove I hadn't had an off due to lack of any signs of damage to either my bike or gear.
Mentioned trading standards and also the fact that I'd got several opinions of experienced bikers on the interweb but his stance remained the same.
I've emailed trading standards and enclosed a photo of the gloves.
Lets see what happens. Wink

I'd really like to return them tied to a brick tied to the front of a Scania. Thumbs Up

Got me thinking with this, bought some black BKS gloves a few months back from J&S in Brum, used probably less then 10 times but the stitching has come adrift between the index finger and thumb on the L/H glove. Is it actionable or am I stuffed?

I'd say if the stitching has come adrift its a straight forward return issue.

Trading Standards got back to me saying I've got to contact my local Citizens Advice.
Unfortunately, they don't deal with issues via email so I'm gonna have to visit in person.

I did pay with a visa card btw and I will look into the charge back thing. Thumbs Up
