New to biking here (& middle aged). Only had a CBF125 for about a month now and thoroughly enjoying it all. Realised that I should have done this years ago.

Anyone else started as an alternative to commuter travel during the Olympics and for pure enjoyment as well?

I am in North Kent and work near Angel.
By car its 1.5-2 hours
Public transport, its about 2 hours
That's both on good days & god knows the timescales during the Olympics

Does this seem like a good idea or am I being naive about the City Riders and their manic attitudes ?

City riders tend to be fairly sane, if only because it's so dangerous.
It's the cyclists who seem to have a death wish.

I just hope the city's grid-locked during the Olympics - filter heaven Cool

Just make sure you are aware of what going on, keep an eye out for bikes behind you as many in the city don't like to be held up by you for any length of time will try risky methods to pass.

Still learning the trick and confidence in filtering. I'm an old fart so I am more cautious than the young kids

I'm more thinking about the couriers. Some of their antics are.....suicidal

I think it will be bad for bikes as well. Imagine The Limehouse Link tunnel. Only one lane available to you and the cars and the equivalent of a bus lane line down the centre you mustn't cross or touch or you get a large fine. Where are you going to filter?

The Highway, lots of turns banned so extra traffic anyway, again only one lane available and standstill traffic. Every time you are filtering down the outside and meet an island or central reservation (especially at signals, you will have now where to filter except the wrong side of the islands/signals, right under the CCTV.

First time commuting today Orpington to Angel (17miles) took it really easy & about 50 minutes. Once confidence improves, & I find the best route I'm sure it will get down to 35-40 minutes.
First time filtering as well, also not as bad as I thought, just followed others doing the same thing

So good news for those mature learners that want to commute especially in lieu of the Olympics, it's not as stressful as you think.

Apologies to anyone that was held up by an old fart on CBF125 & L plates

I'm an old fart aswell mate.
Only passed my test in March, and i'm still trying to build my confidence up.
I don't know much about filtering,as a very rarely find myself in a situation where i Need to do it.
Mind you i live in a fairly small city.Lincoln
But back to the confidence,i'm only just getting confident about overtaking on single carriageway A Roads.
Until Saturday I would just sit back and wait for a long straight so I could just gently go past without going majorly over the NSL just incase Police where about and I didn't see them.
On Saturday I had a cop bike behind my observing me for a few hours,I now have the confidence to overtake on a short straight and still get back in before the next bend.
I did an overtake at 90mph then slowed down to 65'ish,I was expecting a right roasting when we next stopped for him to discuss how that section of the ride was.But he actually said it was a good overtake, and once past the car and safely in front I slowed down.
Just those words boosted my confidence in that situation.
If you get chance have a ride out with the Police, they give you more confidence in your riding abilities.
Tef watch out,i'll soon be challenging you for length of posts. Laughing

This.

Just do it. I was very nervous but after I bucked up and just did it, found it easy, and oh so addicting. Especially when the prick in the BMW estate refuses to back down to you and you finally (and so easily) pull ahead of him. Way, way ahead of him.

That's a lot of time to cut so don't rush to beat your record. A wise man once said that it's better to arrive 30 minutes late in this life than 30 years early in the next one. And as in your case, it might only be three minutes, so don't risk it.

Ask a cabbie for route suggestions, that's how I've often picked good routes that cut traffic lights or roadworks, or introduces bus lanes. I've always found them helpful in that aspect.

Thanks for the gems of advice on this one.

I'm not in that much of a hurry & thought cutting 10 minutes off the time would work out well. it's not a target, just a timecheck when I get home & allow me to estimate the journey. Will just have to see how I get on.

Not thought of asking cabbies about routes as they have tended to be unfriendly to car drivers, but on a bike now so think I will ask

My workplace is being used to play host to the American Team. This means that I've been forced into taking leave for a couple of weeks during the peak season for the Olympics. On the one hand, it's buggered any chances of me deciding when i want to go on holiday, but on the flip side, it's two contiguous weeks that I didn't have to fight for.

The even itself is so far beneath my notice that I'm just treating it as a larger-than-usual tourist frenzy. Whatever happens, it's gotta be better than the riots, right? Laughing
