Ok, I'm hoping to pass my test soon and I want a bigger bike. I have a Yamaha YBR125 at the moment and apart from it's lack of grunt I couldn't fault it! Never let me down, very comfortable and fun to ride! I'd like a bike like this but I really want some speed now, I've been riding for 2 years and I've never been stupid and gone faster than I feel safe, but I want to be able to top 90mph!

Could anyone recommend any bikes that would be legal?

Honda CB 500. Thumbs Up

Just bought one after passing my test 3 weeks ago.

Absolutely love the acceleration and power of it, but then again, I've just moved up from a 125 so of course I'm going to like it. Laughing
Being a twin, it's got a lot of low down torque to put a big smile on your face! Very Happy

Renowned as the best and most reliable 500.

Mines restricted and the top speed I've seen out of it was 97.
Apparently they're good for at least 115 unrestricted.

Servicing is cheap as well.

Yamaha XJ600 or Kawak Er-5s are worth a look in too...

Depends on your budget really!

My wifes ER6N is a stupidly easy bike to ride, low, light but with a good turn of speed.

I don't know if your budget would run to one, or if the insurance is reasonable for you either though.

How about you tell us what kind of license you'll be getting?

If you're going to sit your tests on a 125 and get an A<=25kW license, then you can ride anything as long as it's not making over 25kW (or 0.16kW/kg). You can restrict more powerful bikes down to that limit, and I'd suggest that you do that.

Look at any of the 500 twins: GS500, ER-5, CB/CBF500, GPZ500, or a 'sensible' 600-650 like the Diversion 600, CBF600 or SV650S. It doesn't really matter what you get: any power beyond 25kW/33bhp will be lost, but you'll get the benefits of better brakes and suspension if you go for something sportier (but higher insurance and running costs).

If you want more specific advice, tell us what style of bikes that you like and what uses you'll be putting it to.

I'd agree with this. I had a CB500 after I did my DAS and never had any problems with it. On cold mornings it was key in, choke on full and flick switch. Stupidly reliable and plenty of go to boot.

You can pick up a good one for a fairly decent price too Wink

Thanks for the Advice! I wouldn't want to go over £2000 for the bike, I reckon I could get around £1400 for my YBR and with Insurance costs on top! I looked at the CB500 and they don't seem to expensive!

The bike cost me £850 and insurance was £550 tpo; 17 years old, 1 years NCD.

Although depending on your info, the insurance could be more or less than what I'm paying.
