I often like to go on camping bike trips. I always go alone and even when I dont, I like to have my own tent so all use is a 2 man tent. I only tour in the summer months, however on my last camp out in north wales it was really windy. My tent survived and stayed up for the most part but it did manage to bend itself inwards once or twice. There was a lot of flexing in the poles even though the guy ropes were tensioned as advised in the stuck topic on this forum. The noise was also absolutely deafening. When dismantling the tent I noticed one of my tent poles had split.

Not sure whether to use the same tent again or buy a new one. This one cost me about £30. I simply repaired the split pole with black tape but I seriously doubt the wooded poles are up for another windy night. How much would you recommend I spend on a 2 man tent specifically made with rain and wind in mind?

I can't comment on the wind and rain aspect as I'm a fair weather camper, but if you are doing trips regularly I'd recommend spending a fair bit more than £30. That's the sort of tent I'd buy for a festival and then leave to be burnt on the last night.

I did a 12 day cycling tour of Holland a couple of years ago with a £150ish vango 3 man tent. There were 2 of us per tent and that was fine, so a 2 man one would be perfect alone. They were pretty light when packed, easy to put up, and the one we were using had 3 poles that were at 120deg to each other, it was a really nice design actually. Yeah I'm not sure how it would fair in proper shitty conditions (like wales), but it was definitely waterproof Thumbs Up

Look into a Coleman Cobra. I have the 3 man version and can get my ample frame, 2 panniers and other trip shite, and still have room for another person.

Bought it in November last year for under £40. Alloy poles too so no splitting!

Had a look on the vango website, of the tents they do now, this is the closest to the one we used:

https://www.vango.co.uk/expedition/halo-200.html

HH of 5000 which is pretty good I think.

Asking that is like asking how long is a piece of string?
Do want a basic "leasure" tent or a more expensive and storm proof expedition type tent?

If you want some serious advice on seriously good tents contact Les at traveldriplus https://www.traveldriplus.com/shop/index.php or better still give him a call his knowledge of camping gear is almost legendary

If you buy a shit one, this happens:

https://lh3.ggpht.com/_mJuQcw6-3ws/SOOo0pwZ1VI/AAAAAAAAAUw/B5igeThLk44/s512/dscf1291.jpg?imgmax=800

After that experience I spent £100+ on an Aztec Equina, was well worth it at the time.

You won't get a decent tent for anything less than £60 new.

For what is a very lightweight summer tent, my vango tempest 200 stood up remarkably well to some pretty horrible conditions.

It was the snow that killed it in the end.

I've got one of those Halo 200 ones now and it works very well although I find the pack size a bit bulky, can't see much it wouldn't stand up to.

Your main problem though is having fibreglass poles. They bend in then greenstick in a strong wind, just like you've found. You really need alloy poles.

For ultimate wind resistance you need a combination of alloy poles then either a tunnel design with internal tension bands (so any of the vango TBS ones, my spirit 200 stayed up and solid in a genuine, sustained force 10 wind) or a geodesic/semi-geodesic design where there are at least two points at which the poles cross.

Ill second that, used the biker for a few years now, fast erect when its bucketing down and with the storm guys on its rock solid in nasty thunderstorms.

Great kit. Thumbs Up

But, not cheap, and we all got our favourites.

I bought a Coleman Phad X2 at the start of the year for £110, plently of space inside and packs reasonably small (42 x 17 cm Ø).

Apexperv non in particular as my criteria is based on more space and high spec than compact and quick pack. But ! Check out the websites of go,outdoors tentscamping.co.uk and outdoormegastore Coleman coastline reduced from 130 to 90 and vango beta 450 reduced to 119 cheaper maybe elsewhere.

I like my Vango tunnels as they are easy to put up and pack down and cope very well with windy Welsh conditions (so far).

My camping is more leisure/summer cos I'm not hardcore like Stinkwheel Embarassed and usually (not always) there are 2 of us so for me space for us and the gear is important - I also like a tent that I can stand up in if possible.

Our home-from-home is an Icarus 400. The bedroom is big enough for the double airbed plus 2 sets of panniers, jackets and helmets, tankbags etc. It also has a living space that is about the same size, useful if the weather isn't so good. Weight is 12kg so not too heavy for the bike but we tend to take this one if we're away for more than a couple of nights. I can (just) stand up in it, the OH can't.

This year, for rallies and weekend trips we've got a Zeal 500. Weight of this one is 8kg so much more manageable on the bike. It's taller than the Icarus, the OH can stand up at the front of this one. One massive room with loads of room for sleeping and storing stuff. The porch is a lot smaller but still useable.

We've also just bought an Ark 300 as a one-nighter or for when one of us is away on our own, not tested yet so no pics but this is a 4kg lightweight. It's not so tall but again plenty of space in the bedroom and a useful little porch. The intention for this one is to use it when we're not carrying all the luggage and having seen it up in the shop it looks like it'll be fine.
