Insurance will still be expensive since they're mainly owned by 17 year old male's who go on to drop or crash them (I'm almost 40, so insurance not too bad for me). You already have 8 points, so, no offence but it kinda suggests you may not be the most perfect of road users, so there's a higher chance you too would stuff one. They cost a lot to repair, though there are now a fair few smashed up examples that get broken for parts on eBay, so replacement bits are not too hard to find, though you might end up having to get panels sprayed etc. They're also very nickable since the parts sell well on eBay.
You'd be much better off with a used YBR-125 or a CG-125. They'll be much cheaper to buy and insure and go almost as fast as a YZF-R125. |
iam 20, and the 8 points are from driving a purchased car home without insurance got unlucky. im in love with the look of the bike and dont really want anything that looks like the ybr, or cg. ive bin quoted 600 a year on insurance with the 8 points. 50,000 on a car lol!,
So i could get it on finance using uni loans ? |

They'll look at your credit score, if you're considering finance. Given that you've got student loans coming in, I can't imagine that you'll rank massively highly on their 'who to give money to' scale.
Personally, I wouldn't bother with the YZF - it's a massively overpriced 125, and doesn't offer significant enough performance benefits to actually be worth any kind of increased asking price, much less the actual cost of it from new.
Go for a dull 125, pass your test and then get a 'pretty' big bike, if you have to; I can't honestly recommend getting a shiny first bike, purely because a) you'll drop it, b) they're guaranteed chavbait, and c) a fully-faired bike with L-plates and a four-stroke engine just screams 'style over substance'*.
As to the 8 points; some people report that it makes no difference at all (##Paddy## being a case in point), others find it makes a cripplingly huge difference to their insurance. Either way, you're better off looking for one of the blander-looking 125s; they're generally cheaper to get parts for, as well as not being an epic ballache to insure.
Go secondhand, go for something that's a bit older: a lot of the eighties/nineties 125s come up quite cheap, both to buy and to run. Quite often, people will only chase down the obvious candidates, like the CG and the YBR, as have been suggested; they're popular for that reason, and as such, tend to command higher prices. Don't forget, the more recent a 125, the more likely it is to be significantly more complex than it has to be - the CBF being a great example; who the hell actually needs fuel injection on a 125 single, FFS?
I've just seen your answer regarding the points; whatever you're going to buy, it's likely that they'll continue to sting you for some time yet, since avoiding insurance is what you were penalised for. Insurers are a vindictive bunch, and while there's a distinct absence of carrot, they're serious believers in use of the stick. Brace yourself for some serious premiums - there will be some relatively sane ones there, but they're not likely to let you forget that one slip.

I'm sorry, my previous post was unnecessarily rude and unhelpful.
I'll try again.
You have two problems:
1) You're poor.
2) You're a high insurance risk.
Your proposed solution is to get the most expensive 125 to purchase and insure. And at the end of the day, it's still a 125.
Conclusion: you're probably doing an economics degree.
If you have the money to buy that ridiculously overpriced trinket, you can afford to pay someone to hand-hold you through your tests, get yourself a license, and then buy a bigger bike that will offer far better value for money and be cheaper to insure. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Could getting a bike etched/ data tagged deter mugs who basically steal for parts etc.
Btw also guys why do you like to batter young individuals who choice a yamaha yzf r125cc as a their first bike.
We are young and the looks matters in terms of motor vehicles, you guys must know you have been past this stage.
Most r125cc riders purchase their bike used for say around £2,999 and sell for around £2,100 or so, there's not much of a lose on the riders part. |

btw what bike did you purchase?
Yes but other than getting yourself from A to B, what else did you benefit from riding your bike which i guarantee you would have gained whilst riding a yzf r125cc.
|
Uh, I would hazard you won't have learnt how to offroad, which you only would have got from a dt125/similar.
Riding a r125 won't teach you anything any other 125 will. Bit about road awareness, bit about maintenance and small amount of cornering. Oh, it will teach you about being shafted, and a bit about faking being johnny big potatoes though.

R125 licks dick.
Get a cheapy CG/YBR, the looks mean nothing when you get overtaken by a 250cc scooter. Or when you smash it along the floor and remove most of its value |

Firstly, ignore all the people calling you an idiot for spending that much on a 125 - it's your money, and student grants = free cash so by the end of your degree you'll have vehicle(s) & experience and your mates will just have damaged livers. Good choice on the spend firstly.
I'm 23 and I used my student loan to by a YZF R125 on finance over 3 years in 2010 I think, just paid it off. Buying New, Yamaha did 0% on Black Horse Finance, and I put a £1300 deposit down so was paying £65 p/m ~ish.
To get finance as a student, you must have a guarantor. My auntie was my guarantor - means that if I didn't pay she it would go to her account instead. She was my backup. However, I NEVER missed a payment - so you would need to make sure this would be the case.
Each student loan I got through, I would put a grand to one side ish and use that solely towards the bike and paying it off, easy!
Lovely bike, looks the business, but it's pretty damn slow. It'll feel fast at first, then you'll get used to how slow it is. It also sounds NAFF. I've just gotten myself a CBR 600 F (a great first big bike) and it's fantastic, and now I would hate to go back to a 125!
When I sold it, I got about £2000 for it. Quite a drop (2k is a lot!!)..
My honest, genuine suggestion though is to get a crapper bike and use that until you want to move up - we're talking years though if you're sensible.
I was given the advice to get a crapper bike like a YBR, and don't worry; I didn't take it. I DID enjoy the R125, but it's not worth 4k when you can get a second hand R6 for that.
If you're intent on buying it, you send an e-mail out to ALL Yamaha dealers in the country stating you are intent on buying a new one, and what is the best price they could offer. Once you've gotten this price written down, you go to your LOCAL and show them all the prices, telling them if they can't beat it then you're going to drive to wherever the other shop is and buy the bike same day. I did this and was congratulated on doing my research, and got a couple of hundred quid off easy.
Finally you can't de-restrict the 125, or do anything performance-wise (except bore out the engine to 180cc- and even then it'll hardly increase top speed, maybe by 5mph, because that's all the engine can put out).
Final suggestion, if you HAVE to buy a new first bike, get a ninja 250 restricted and legal and you'll enjoy it more. ____________________ Left the forum. |
