Unofficial record set on a road based R1 (Skip to 1:12 to avoid sponsor crap)

That is cool. It looked like he could have gone a bit quicker in places if he hadn't encountered other riders.
Thumbs Up

I think that is the 3rd fastest lap ever? Laughing

Mental Riding. He was really pushing that thing to its limits of grip. What are those tires he uses, I want them. Laughing

Video looked like it was damp and overcast too which I suspect didn't help.

I think it's more like 12th as that was only bridge to gantry but still very impressive.

Ties into that other thread about cars and bikes and what could potentially be quicker over the TT course Thinking

Can't watch it yet as I'm at work but it'd be interesting to see if it looks possible to shave significant amounts more off if he was held up much. Still think a car will always hold the record however...

I believe they're looking into taking the TT international, including circuits like the Nordshcleife, turning it into a sort of season of road/massive circuit racing Thumbs Up

It was in MCN the past few weeks, TT going international or global or something like that. They're having talks with the governing body to try to arrange something.
But yes, more than likely will take a lot of attention away from Motogp. Unlike F1, where there's constant rule changes and stuff, but not much else to watch, bike racing has many other options, so maybe the FIM need to pull their fingers out and actually come up with some good ideas. Stoners already been pushed to retirement and this is one of his reasons.

They used to race there in the 'good' old days, my failing memory recall that a Suzuki 500 (bendy frame, thin tyres and all) got round in 7 mins or so. Even the nutters of those days rekonded that the 'ring was a death trap, thats why it was dropped from the calender, along with the IOM.
It would make for a far more entertaining race series though. No problems of the results being dominated by a couple of names, they would probably be killed on a regular basis.

I would think they would only be killed once.

There was probably only a couple of seconds in that for traffic, but why the hell have BMW not given this guy an S1000? Surely the free publicity must be worth it?

Yeah I was thinking that...be interesting to see what it could do if it's considered the fastest overall production bike for track (Not sure if that's the case or not though).

He adjusted the gear ratios to be suitable for the track but on one corner in particular around the 4 minute mark he was bouncing off the limiter leaving the corner for a good few seconds. Did anyone else watch it thinking hes hampered the acceleration performance of the bike, by comparison to other cockpit cams of the R1?

If he used non-road legal tyres would he not be faster still?

Incredible video.

I'm sure he's optimised the gearing as best he can given how long he's been going for this.

I'm sure he could be quicker on slicks (never used them myself so I don't know how much better they are than Racetecs etc.) but if you get into non-road legal stuff then it's a whole different ball game lap records wise. Also I'm not sure if you could do a public session at the ring without a road legal vehicle could you?
