Well, yesterday I crashed on the way back from work. Thought I'd make a pointless thread about it, like you do. Wink

It was pissing it down (bank holiday innit) following a car, not sure of speed. I look down and when I look back up the car's braking really hard and indicating. I slam on the brakes and put too much back brake on. My rear end skidded left and right I flew past the car (thank god) hit the deck and slid down the wet road (It was brand new tarmac) for what must've been nearly 50m!! I hit the curb with my hip and the bike came into me. Ouchies. :p

Felt like such a dick. Completely my fault ofc.

Damage:
Waterproof over trousers = shredded
Leather jacket = skuffed

Bike = Scratches on the exhaust and a bent brake leaver....That's it! Lucky or what! XD It slid right next to me for the whole way...I don't get it? There are massive scratches on the road...weird.

Car just drove off slowly...bit of a tit... Rolling Eyes

Then i went to Swansea to drink away the pain in my hip I was wearing a morph suit aswell Cool haha XD

True Story. Wink

Yerr, I don't think i was too close, but it was the looking down distraction followed by a bit of newbie panic and too much back brake. If I hadn't looked down, and braked normally I would have had more than enough room:)

Could also help positioning yourself to the rear and the right so they can see you in their mirror and if they suddenly stop you have a clear exit. I do this, but if they turn right ahead of you then you can't really be to the right, so you need to learn to judge the best road position for yourself.

I had one of those before, checking out a fine looking girl on the left when the car in front braked suddenly, except I didn't lock the brakes, and reactions meant that I ended up stopping to the right of the car, level with the drivers door, instead of inside his boot.

It was a mixture of awesome appreciation of my own skill at avoiding an accident and an acknowledgement that I was retarded to not pay attention to the road ahead enough.

It doesn't take much for things like that to happen, I did something similar in the first couple of weeks of riding, looked down for a second, look back up bam guy in front has dropped anchors, causing me to brake hardcore, I skidded to the side of him because I didnt give myself enough space

2 second rule indeed

the 2 second rule (more in the wet) really is a simple thing that will help to avoid this kind of thing...oh and looking where you're going helps too! Laughing

Ive had a couple of times where ive looked down, up and seen cars brake when i first got my 125. Nowdays i stay futher back than 2 seconds, more like 4 in the dry and 6 in the wet. Mainly because i dont have much experience E braking.
Glad you are ok

We all make mistakes mate, none of us are ever remotely perfect.

Please give (as stated) at the very least 4 second gap in the rain.

Even more, it doesn't really matter if you're 5 minutes late for work/or appointment, does it?

Life is so much more important than all that crap.

Think about things and you'll be fine Thumbs Up

Leaving more of a gap doesn't actually make your journey take any longer though... that's why it's so stupid when people insist on tailgating.

Worth practising in a controlled environment rather than screwing up and hitting the deck when you HAVE to e-brake, easy to do with no practice, I went down on my CBT from fistfulling the brakes on the controlled braking practice
Thumbs Up

Emergency braking, think it's an american term really
e-brake is a handbrake in a car, it's really "controlled braking" as they say

Yup indeed, I lernt soon after I passed my test, Corner on the A27 - was to close to the car infront - Stand still traffic ahead, he slamed his breaks on - cue me doing the same, only just manage to skid past him and stop at the side of his bonnet - Totally my fault - Thumbs Down

Done similiar myself, didnt fall off but came to an undignified wobbly stop. paying to much attention to the guy tail gating me and not looking in front enough. Looked up, saw a brake light, grabbed the front brake.

If it was at 50mph and I bounced along the deck and smashed into something that would be an interesting story. But it was at 5mph. And it resulted in a red faced wobble stop.

Thats less interesting...

Glad you are OK though! Thumbs Up

You Tw*t.
But at least you live to tell the tale. Smile

As said, more space between you and the vehicle infront bla bal bla.

If one hasn't fell off on a wet road one can never claim to be a biker.

It is a sore learning curve.
This is precisely the occassion when ABS will save the day.

That's a long way to skid on tarmac with such minimal damage I would have thought it would have been far more.! (twist of luck you seem to have had)

I know you said you have no idea how fast you were going, but put us in the ballpark +/- 10mph.

Ummm 60? maybe 50? In between? haha. I went and had a look at the mark on the road this evening It's not 50m Razz It was 20 paces so closer to 20m. It's weird, there's two defined scratches on the road and the only damaged things are my lever and exhaust...fuck know's how nothing else touched the floor, I don't get it Razz

Wrong. The real life mantra is as follows.

After careful scientific analysis (conjured in my head Wink Laughing ) I am left with 2 possible conclusions. :-

1) Your a total cock looking down at that speed. (Darwins theory will soon claim you.)

2) Your a lying turd.

Now which is it.?

Umm...I have admitted quite a few times I was a total cock, prick, knob etc etc.

How the hell have you concluded I'm a lying turd? Are you saying it's not possible to slide ~20m on a freshly tarmacked downhill road in the rain?
