I passed my A2 last October, had an off a couple hours before my test but that's another story. I'm turning 21 in November, can I just take a DAS Mod2 test and then get an unrestricted licence?

Need to take mod1 and mod2 - you don't need to take theory or cbt again Very Happy

Is it worth it for a year? I was way over 21 and passed on a 125, didn't bother me.

Tbh If you drive at legal speeds the restriction doesn't make that much difference.

Agreed. It's called "Accelerated Access". Pass it, your 25kW restriction gets removed[1], fail it, you don't lose any entitlement.

Just watch out that the online test booking doesn't actually have any specific category (presumably you book "big bike mod 1/2") and requires (or used to require) a theory test pass number, so you may need to resort to speaking on the phone like some sort of caveman.

[1] If the DVLA can cope with that, god alone knows how many ways they could find to screw it up.

Just to let you know that this option becomes unavailable after the Jan 2013 licence regulations change.

I emailed the DVLA (or was it the DSA?) and got a surprisingly informative reply Shocked

Yeah to be honest it seems like a waste of time/money really - instead get the 'big bike' that you want and just slap a restrictor kit on it (where applicable) until your 2 year restriction period is up.

But if you really are flush, fancy doing your bit for the sluggish economy and want to help keep your local riding school in business, then break a leg and do DAS.
No need to retake CBT + Theory.

Did you wait out a 25kW restriction period? It starts to feel more like a sentence.

Balls!!

Young'uns, no patience!!
Just wait the 2 years out and save your money. Just because you have passed once, doesn't guarantee a pass the 2nd time around either.

Same question to you. Did you wait out a 2 year restriction?

Yes I did.
Over 3 bikes too.
The er5, 1st, could do a ton restricted 2-up.
The er6 (still have it) throttle stop sucked donkey balls, but was do-able.
Ninja 250, was 33bhp anyway. Never took that much over 90 as it felt like a kite.

Didn't you wait out your restriction?

In fact the er6 was restricted for just over the 2 years, as hubby was a month behind me with his restriction.

So you made your restriction period exciting by changing bikes a lot, costing money in insurance premiums & admin fees and potential increased depreciation. Someone wants to get their restriction period over with sooner and he has no patience?

I was happy with the er5, loved it in fact. Would still own it if it was up to me Smile
The reason the bikes changed was because OH wanted newer/more modern.
I had a lot of catching up to do too Very Happy

The one year the er5 cost me £7.50 to insure, once cashback was received!! sold it for more than we bought it. Was stripped down and in the kitchen for about 3 months so was still riding the 125.
The Ninja was the most expensive to insure (around £125) and we didn't lose much when selling it.

There was also 2 people riding while both restricted. Lucky enough to have access to both bikes at the same time.

Yes, and I believe that it was about 18 months too long.

With hindsight, I should have gone DAS or at least Accelerated Access when I was ready to move up, but I am essentially a cheapskate. Wink

Totally agree with cutting the sentence short...

Passed and restricted a 600 near Christmas, and only lasted 2 or 3 months before I passed the accelerated.
I would have done it earlier had the weather/appointments been better.

By all means, it wasn't slow... but it wasn't as fast as my car Sad

Go for it! And good luck!

Haha fair play, I will yield to you on that point.

But I'll hold to my original opinion - capital & time spent better elsewhere.

Anyway, as Iain mentions, those restrictors are unpredictable man they can just loosen themselves out at any time without the rider noticing until after the restriction period is up...!
