Do not have access to the motorcycle roadcraft atm. Wondered if anyone could dig out the reference for me to being able to use the full width of the road (when safe to do so). i.e. being allowed on the 'wrong' side of the white line.

Just need it to win an argument (you know the type Wink )

I know it's in there, just can't recall the exact wording.

Thanks in anticipation.

Not the exact reference, taken from a guide for the test.

Quote:
You will be expected to use the cornering techniques described in ‘Roadcraft’, using the full width of the nearside of the road where appropriate, but you should always be prepared to sacrifice the position you take to improve your view for safety. When it comes to positioning the order of priority is SAFETY, then STABILITY then VIEW. You should not cross onto the offside of the road purely to improve your view, however, there are occasions where it may be acceptable to cross onto the offside of the road in order to improve the stability of your machine. Your observer will explain this technique in more detail.

Out of interest what colour is the cover of that?
I ask as I heard that's one way to tell the age of the 'advanced' rider! Very Happy

A sort of Wedgewood blue, I only bought it last year at a jumble.
Cop has a "Corker" helmet and is on a Triumph with a "dustbin" rear mudguard.

Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2002, Schedule 6, Road Markings.

See marking 1004 and "Vehicular traffic [...] should not cross or straddle the line unless it is safe to do so".

So if it's "safe to do so" then vehicular traffic may cross or straddle the line. That's the purpose of the qualifier. It's deliciously tautological to note that it's not safe to cross the line when it's not safe to cross the line.

Also, Section 10 doesn't list that marking, so it's not an offence by itself to ignore the "should" (per RTA 1988 Section 36).

I did bikesafe a few years ago and I was told and shown and followed on the other side of the road.

Sometimes with lots of park cars or other hazards it's safer to ride on the other side if safe to do so.

One of the other things I remember is to look in your mirrors before signalling, sometimes there is no one there so why bother, if you have good obs then you become more aware.
