rogerborg will know the exact air filter box im going to describe as he had the same bike i've got.

but i have an air filter inside a plastic "air filter box"

its a rectangular box with a cone filter inside.

im wondering if anyone can think if a decent way to modify this so i can install a 12v charger port inside with a little latchable flip up "door" on the filters side?

i was thinking that doing this would mean i can plug in something like a phone charger/savnav and not have to worry about water/rain shorting it or anything while riding while maintaining relatively easy access to it?

it would also keep it out of sight from those prying eyes.

Add electrics to chinese bike.

Sign own death warrant.

Why not just get a waterproof one and mount near the screen so minimal water gets on it anyway...or under seat?!

removing seat procedure

1) remove rear rack retaining bolts as these also secure the rear mudguard and seat brackets
2) loosen rear shock top bolts
3) remove rack
4) remove seat

bit of a pain in the arse

as for adding electrics to the bike, its not a problem because it'll come directly off the battery.

im also changing the lighting systems over to LEDS to reduce the load on the charging/battery system to allow for spot lights and 12v power socket.

its also a VERY common add on for these bikes

As is rust, but I'm not overly fond of that either.

Direct to battery would be an unwise choice...Many times have I killed my battery doing this.

meh, no where else to connect it really.

and rust is only a problem if you dont look after them, i.e cover and ACF50

You need to buy those things though...

My bikes live outside.

You can wire it to somewhere that gets power when the ignition is on...that would be wiser.

i'll be adding a toggle switch to the + so you have to turn it on/off when you use/done with it.

but this is a little off topic hehe

I have one of these on the car for my fan and also have one on the bike for the grips.

I also forget these (also the car seems to kill the switches....quite easily)

lol probably need switches rated for the max current that the battery can provide.

no point using a switch rated for the device its powering because if the battery is suppling current to the switch and the switch cant handle it it'll melt the switch.

I am about to do almost the same thing and someone sent me this link

https://www.burnsmoto.com/usb-power-socket-weatherproof.php

Good thing with this is if you are using a phone or sat nav you will take it with you when you leave the bike so no draining the battery when you go. You could also wire it in to an ignition wire if you feel the need.

What is that then? The sticking electrics in an airbox where petrol fumes are. There is a reason why there is no electrics in there but hey. You carry on.

The airbox has been designed with some form of money thrown at it to get it just right...

Start drilling/cutting its going to be changing something somewhere.

please go and read up on electricity/wiring before you make any electrical modifications to your bike.... that statement is both ridiculous and wrong.

I actually think using the airbox as a little phone stash box is a neat idea. somewhere you can securely leave something charging for an hour or so while parked up. and I can see why you would want the option to leave it on without the keys in the ignition.

you cant just use the original lid for the box as you have to take the seat off?

If you are going to go for it, probably best to either mod another second hand one or find a different box to play with. if it all goes wrong or you want to sell the bike, you'll be glad you have one that isnt mangled.

again, understanding the electrics involved in this project isnt too tricky - have a bit of a read so you at least know the relationship between current, voltage and power and voltage, resistance and current.
