I decided to clean the airfilter today.

Now I may be new to all this, but shouldn't the filter go between the air intake and carburettor?

Whoever did it last put it outside both pipes. I've effectively had no air filter for the last 8 months.

I'm guessing this isn't particularly good.

Should go air through the filter into the carb, out the other side of the carb into the engine.

Yeh, your presumed placement is correct. Air needs to go through the filter.

I sympathise with you, your bike may have previously been owned by a half-wit.
