They were on about a year or so ago about lowering the age to 16 to learn to drive but making it harder for people to pass, though I've not heard anything since and I think it only applied to cars.

This has been an urban myth that's been around for a long time (I was warned about this at school), I don't think it will happen for the forseeable future, well unless they drop the voting age down to 16 (as should win them a few votes).

I really hope they don't, there is a fair number at 17 don't take driving seriously and dropping the age would only make matters worse.

There are always shit loads of "they're going to do this, my mate told me!!" going around. Don't listen to them unless it has come from someone reliable such as a driving instructor or examiner. And even then until the DSA have said anything offically it's still ages away.

I heard when I was about 14 that they were going to change it to 18. I'm nearly 19 now, and nothing's changed, and I've had my car licence for nearly a year. Soon to add my bike one to it (next Wednesday , 9:37am, fingers crossed)

It is said that they are planning to make the bike test harder by making it include an off road section where by your slow riding, and bike control skills can be assesd, much like on the CBT.

Personally i think the Direct Access idea is living on borrowed timewith far too many people doing their bike test, passing (it aint hard to be honest) then being let loose ont he road allowed to ride whatever they can get their hands on.

Oh my gosh! They best not reduce the age you can drive to 16!

My sister is 22 and learning to drive a car. Her driving instructor was telling me he is currently teaching an 18 year old lad who is impossible to get on with.

He always thinks he knows better than the driving instructor and is a hopeless driver. He also told me that this guy often comes up to corners way too fast and then just turns the wheel without braking. The instructor asked him why he thought he could get away with this.

The lad replied: "I can do it on my playstation!"

Rolling Eyes Brick Wall

The driving instructor explained over and over that life has no reset button, and you get no extra lives. He is going to go to the company that he works for and explain to them that he can no longer teach this person. If I were him, I would go to his parents and ask them why they never taught their son the difference between fantasy and reality!

Also yesterday I was going along a road near my house in my girlfriends car, and there was a side road on my left where a car was waiting to turn right across my path to go the opposite direction to me. As I approached the side road, A moped rider with 'phat neonz' came around the LEFT SIDE of this car and then TURNED RIGHT across his nose almost hitting me!

Rolling Eyes Sixteen year olds! Wink

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

Hi

The rumours seem to vary.

Most likely is that they will bring it into line with many other European countries and increase it to 18 (but whether they reduce the moped age to 14, or allow under 18s to drive those Aixim things would be anyones guess).

All the best

Keith

As far as cars go, 17 is too young to be allowed out on the road alone. It's a potentially lethal weapon. They should have a similar protocol in place for cars to bikes so when you pass your test, you may only drive a car of limited power for 2 years.

Americans who let 16 year olds out in cars are ludicrous, that's just asking for trouble. Exclamation

Bikes are a different matter, having not been involved in the bike scene for very long I'm not really in a position to answer.

It's bad enough seeing 17 year olds on the road let alone 16 year olds, they are bad enough on scooters let alone a car. If anything it should be moved to 18/19.

At 18 you're legally an adult - It seems sensible enough to require you to be an adult before being allowed to venture out on the roads.

One year does make a difference, and as for 16yr olds... Even the sensible ones are easily distinguished from someone only a year older. The bus i go home on has plenty of people from another college on it; The 16yr olds who've just left school stand out a mile away.

18 Seems fair enough to me* Thumbs Up

*Which may or may not have something to do with me being 18 :p

Hi

Some US states the age to drive a car is some way below 16 Confused . Some other countries will not let you have a driving licence until you are 25.

The problem is that some 14 year olds would be perfectly able to drive, some 21 year olds are lethal.

Personally I would say that 17 is fine, and quite possibly it could be lowered to 16.

In many way I would like to see the common system of allowing 14 year old to ride mopeds, 16 year olds to ride 125s and then 18 year olds to drive cars or ride bikes over 125cc.

All the best

Keith
