I was just wondering, when a CBT has run out, can you do another straight after for an extra 2 years?
Mine is running out in a couple of months so i just want to make sure incase i dont pass my test in time.

Thanks
Jay

As far as I know of you can.

I should think you'd be able update it before it even expires. (correct me if I'm wrong Smile )

You can rewew them as many times as you want, you don't have to wait until it has run out.

Hi

As they say you can just redo your CBT.

Under the old rules where there was a part 1 and part 2 test you had to take both within 2 years or you got a 1 year ban. This system disappeared about a decade ago.

All the best

Keith

Don't confuse part 1 which finished in December 1990 and the introduction of CBT which was introduced in December 1990.

Under part 1, you needed to complete the test of ability over seven set excercises in a confined space, obtain the certificate and then go for part 2 (the full licence test).

At that time there was no restriction on how long you held your provisional licence for, and a rider could take straight to the road without any trainingwhat so ever. The part 1 certificate was valid for 2 years.

When CBT was introduced, that is when it became a requirement for all learner riders to take a course of instruction and originally the DL196 was valid for life, but this was quickly reduced to 5 years, however, in 1992 this was ammended to three years with during which time (and within 2 years of the commencement of their provisional licence) they had to take and pass their full licence test otherwise they were then disqualified from riding for 12 months.

This changed again in 2000 when the life of the CBT certificate was shortened to two years but there was no disqualification if the full licence had not been obtained, it just meant that the individual had to do CBT all over again.

Even though you have already done CBT, you will have to do the full course as you will have to satisfy the instructor that you are competent in all the elements, and given the fact that a number of instructors have been struck off the register for short cutting CBT courses for this very reason in recent months, the majority are not prepared to take the risk, and there may be areas where you were not given proper instruction in the first place.

On the plus side, although you will have to do the full course, you should be able to get it done pretty quickly as you will have the core skills that an absolute beginner will not have, so you should be able to satisfy your instructor in the competence field fairly quickly!
