Do you wear gloves

As the title says, do you wear rubber/latex gloves when doing any mechanical work?

I've tried using them and either they just get snagged up or feel awkward and would rather just get my hands dirty then use a scrubbing brush afterwards.

i find it depends on the task ie doing the chain i wear gloves. The more finer work like engine rebuilds that require a good grip I tend to do without gloves as they are a royal pain when doing delicate stuff!

Sometimes - I have a pack of latex gloves in the garage. But, I normally get there and just want to get on and forget

Never used to, but now I try to wear them simply to cut down on hand washing time.

They do snag on stuff sometimes and my favourite trick is trapping them as I tighten cable ties, but I’m sort of used to them now. As above they come off for some tasks where dexterity is an issue or if handling gaffa tape is required.

I normally get mine supplied courtesy of the Royal Brompton hospital.

Anyway, back on topic. One of the major problems I've found with gloves is after a damn good scrub of the mits afterwards you still smell the latex (or is that just me?)

I always wear pervert gloves for oil changes, but that's about it. Saves cleaning it off later

I don't like using them. Someone told me a really good tip, rub neat washing up liquid in to your hands then let it dry for 30secs or so. It stops the oil/crud from sticking to your skin as it forms a barrier. I've tried it and it works well, not 100% perfect but it works.

Haha covdude, road crud and oil gets into the pores of your skin and you can wash your hands for half an hour and still not get clean, but of course you know that already, you're just (childishly) disagreeing with my posts because of what was said in the other thread.

Sometimes I have used em, but find they do snag easily, usually that tiny bit on the fingertip that doesn't quite fit.

When I was a young un, I used to help my dad fix his classic cars, he swore by this stuff: https://www.commaoil.com/productsguide/view/6/296 - Comma Manista. Really does get the crud off your hands. (Makes mental note to order more myself) Way better than Swarfega or fairy liquid...

As for nails, use same said Manista and a good thin nail brush. Should get 90% of it out. Washing dishes worked as well - seems to be the idea of soaking the hands for some time rather than a quick rinse.

I did find that a little splash of white spirit was good at removing most of the heavy crud from my hands, then using an old rag to wipe them off before washing them.

The problem I've found though is that if I use washing up liquid a couple of times a day or for a couple of days in a row my hands start to dry and the skin cracks (probably a combination of the crud and cleaning though).

I don't know how good the barrier creams and stuff are these days, but I imagine they wouldn't keep everything off the skin.

It's better if you do, else you run a risk of ending up with dermatitis, which you can rarely get rid of, only treat the symptoms.

Latex is better than vinyl, unless you're allergic.

White spirits and washing up liquid can give you it, and used engine oil is carsenogenic

If i don't have any, i just get covered in oil and shit and just clean it off with swarfega.

i don't bother with gloves when working on the bike (unless im cleaning rust off with wire wool, then i use some old garden gloves).
Swarfega gets oil/grime off like a charm but if you're caught in a pinch soap and water with a handful of sugar does the job just as well.

Depending on the job I use nitrile gloves or barrier cream if I need more dexterity, which makes a real difference when you wash your hands - the crud literally just rinses away. Still find it a pain going to wash my hands in between tasks so I have forced myself to use gloves more and can get through a service with them, but they do make your hands a bit stinky/sweaty after a while.
