hello all.. kickstart problems

hello all,, im a new member with a bit of a problem .. my son has got a 57 plate gilera smt 50 and the prob with it is the kickstart is not catching to turn the engine over,, i had a look at it all looks ok inside. the spring is fine. when i try to kick it over i can see the small cog trying to push out on to the big cog to turn the motor round but seams like there is not much force there to do so .. if anyone has had the same problem or anyone can advise me of what i can try next will be brilliant.. thanks a lot for reading this ..
