I think to myself this morning I'll go out of my bike today knowing it had been standing for some two weeks. I know she started last weekend as I checked her over so I didn't give it a second thought.

Got all my gear on, leathers boots, numerous layers. Went outside removed the covers, the lock put them all inside.

Would it start? Would it heck as like. Spent a good ten minutes checking it over and turning the engine until the battery sounds like it had enough. Thought, this is my morning to by an optimate!

Off indoors I go take all my gear off get and get ready to go out in the car. I intend to go to the shops to purchase amongst other things an optimate.

I wander out to the car, and can't help look at the bike and think .... I'll just try once more and see if it will start. Friggin' thing roars into life and I dash indoors and get changed into my leathers!

Bloody typical!

Hah! I'd be ecstatic if it fired up after all that trying. One thing, though...what's an optimate? Eh?

Optimate is a make of battery charger, quite clever but expensive, they stop your battery from being overcharged and give the "optimum" charge...

Mine is an absoloute git if it gets left for a week (especially outside, which is rare fortuneately) which only tends to be when i'm visiting my girlfriend at uni, 150miles away in liverpool Shocked

Apparently a good way of coaxing some bikes into life after being left a week is a squirt of wd40 into the air intake.... or was it the in the cyclinder or both???... never tryed it myself (so dont untill somebody confirms it!)

All of my bikes have started on the button no matter how long I've left them!

Even the GS500 I crashed sat in my garage for 3 months and still started when it was sold!

Yeah the problem is the alarm drains the battery, although it does go into sleep mode if it detects low batt charge I guess it still takes some juice.

Just glad it started!

Paul you need to learn to bump start it Laughing

MY R6 battery seems to be fucked, it's not holding much of a charge, this morning I get the bike out to take for MOT and it also doesn't start Shocked so spent the day bump starting it every time I needed to set off again Laughing

If its being stubborn, leave it 5 mins and come back and it'll probably just work. Bikes can flood easy. Also those little batteries discharge fast, leaving it a few minutes give the battery a chance to recover.

fuel in-what?? on a bike?? are you mad! I would never touch fuel injection on a bike, for exactly the reason you mention....you cant bump-start it.

Plus the old saying "whatever can go wrong will go wrong". So the less that can go wrong the better.

you can bump start injected bikes, just like carbed ones, i don't know where the idea you can't came from.

edit: although i suppose if the battery was completely flat it wouldn't work

Hi

Depends on the exact system. If there is no fuel pressure still in the system then the chances are you will not manage to bump start it, and there are plenty of ignition systems that will not allow bump starting.

All the best

Keith

Hi

Run out of battery power, yes. If the bike has been run recently then you probably can bump start it (should still be pressure in the system for quite a long time).

Running out of petrol should not be a major problem. Just don't keep trying to start it as the fuel pump will not appreciate running dry.

All the best

Keith
