Hi all, my name's miles, I'm 18, I've been lurking around for a while so I thought I'd introduce myself.

I live near exeter, currently riding a Yamaha YBR 125 since last October after trying out a CBT and realizing how much fun a bike is Very Happy

I've passed my theory first time, Mod 1 third time, and my third Mod 2 is next wednesday (Not including the one I missed Neutral )

Would be good to go on a rideout with some of you sometime perhaps.

Ay up, Exeter you say? Not far from me down in Bovey. Apologies if you ever see me riding like a tit around the area.

You're a year younger than me and much further ahead! Where are you doing your tests? And good luck with Mod 2.

Welcome!

Good luck for Wednesday, just don't stress about the test it's not that bad if you're calm about it, when I got tested I had a guy called Rob, a tall thin guy who was really nice. (I take it you're going for the Exeter test center)

Let BCF know how the test goes on Wednesday!

Bovey Tracey? I live in Teignmouth, you're quite close to me too.

We should arrange a BCF ride out, there are a few other BCFers in the Exeter area.

That's the place. Good roads around Teignmouth, when they aren't full of tourists! A ride out would be awesome, I can name a few others on here in the area.

Yep, I'm about twenty minutes away, towards east though, so I doubt I've seen you unless you've been out around that area. If you've ever been along the A30 and seen someone with a skateboard strapped to their bag then it was very likely me. No worries about riding like a tit, I've done much the same on occasion Embarassed

I'm doing my tests in exeter, and thanks Smile How far have you gotten along with your tests?

I think I might have been supposed to have him when I forgot my licence counterpart ( Embarassed ) but someone different took my test when I came back later. And yes I will let you all know tomorrow how it went!

And I'd deffo be up for a rideout Thumbs Up

I meant I've been there before! Where else would you go in this bloody county? Wink

Sorry, I was assuming you were doing your tests through a school, but now I guess you've gone straight to the DSA? That's my plan too. I did my CBT last February along with my Theory (not sure why I did it so early, quite literally got the lowest pass possible). Hopefully get my Mod 1 and 2 out the way this Summer, funds permitting.

Just came back from the mod 2 with a guy called Rob, didn't pass Sad, got two serious errors which were following a truck too close behind, and speeding in a 30 Embarassed . On the brighter side, they're just bad habits that I can easily iron out so I'm not feeling too gutted, and the rest of the ride seemed ok.

Oh right I see, have you been around towards places like Sidmouth, Exmouth, and other little places like Newton Poppleford? I tend to go around them and there's a lot of nice country roads to go around, though not sure if others would enjoy them as much as I do. Yep I've just been practising on my L plates and then gone straight for the tests. Good luck on your Mod 1 and Mod 2 Smile

Get some bloody training! You've failed the MOD2 three times now, and spent £225. For that you could have had a couple of days training and the test. I'm all for just giving it a go, especially for MOD1 at £15.50. But I think if I'd failed my MOD2 twice, let alone 3 times, I would book at least a day with a trainer.

Failing the above, at least ride out with someone who knows their onions on a bike, and get their opinion on your riding skills.

Congratulations! Thumbs Up

Guess what? I've caught up with you now! Passed mine last week.

Statutory question: Got a bike lined up yet?

speeding in a 30 is a common thing on a 125 for failing so im told... you usually dont realise your going so fast because you have to rev its tits off... but im trying to "sense" my speed (i know if im driving at 30/40/50 without looking at speedo in the car easy) but on the bike it seems so much "faster", so its hard (when i think im doing 30, im actually going 20. etc :S

Thanks, and well done!

Just the standard commuter ones, I just want something reliable and good for learning on first, how about you?

Yeah I know what you mean, it didn't help that the road was wide so felt like a 40. It does feel faster: when I'm in the car, it always feels slow and I look at the speedometer and it's 40, yet 40 feels much faster on a bike

well, for my test, im considering buying a open face (scooter) helmet...

I cant see the speedo without actually looking down because the chin guard is in the way on my full face one... I think that would help me a lot - although, then if im actually keeping an "eye on the speedo" it could also look like im checking mirrors, so if i miss mirros passing a junction, i might "fluke it"... so not sure.

tests are sometimes a 50/50. sometimes your unlucky and the guy will only see every mistake you make... and sometimes your lucky and they miss that one that will f... you over.

the one thing im wondering......

whats the best course of action in the following situation...

you pull off from lights, get to 30 (in a 30) ... then a parked car in your path, so you do obs (mirrors etc, start to move over, and some egit in a car over takes you as your pulling over...

If you carry on, they will knock you off, or you hit the car... do you stop, and risk the guy behind going into you?...

would it be a good move to stop?

I have had this happen to me twice now OTW to work, and it never happens in my car... It is clearly the L plates enticing it to happen.

i really think if you have a car license, then you should be able to ride a 125 without L's (after a CBT obviously) (i believe thats A1 license?)...

I know the L's cause accidents... same as when i passed my car test, I had the P's on for about a day... my brother took them off, and the attitude of other road users changed... stupid overtakes no more, no more flashing of lights to make me speed up. ETC...

ahh well, hopefully only a couple of months till i can rip them off...

ALSO, out of interest.

when i pass my test, do i have to tell insurance co i have a full license? or just carry on? - i plan to ride the 125 till i get my years NCB (with car insurance, cant afford a massive bike insurance bill too.)

No it's not. You're probably not owning the road enough. I'd guess when you overtake you're too close to the parked car, or you're not positioning yourself early enough. Even so, the other driver(s) must be knobs for doing it.

Yes L plates, and 125s do seem to attract a lot of idiot behaviour from cagers, but often it's because of their inexperience of riding causing frustration.

Think about this. You pass a car test that normally involves several hours of lessons. At that point you know the basics of controling a car, and you've very little road experience. Are you suggesting that after a days training you are just as proficient on a bike? Just because you have a car licence, doesn't mean didly when it comes to riding a bike.
