okay ive got a problem, when some filthy lowest form of life scummy chavs tried stealing (or just plain destroying) my taxdisk + holder, they cracked it, so today i went to change it and the tax disk was unreadably waterlogged and ripped, its now unreadable, now im not displaying a tax disk, but I am legally taxed still surely? is it okay for me to use my bike for the next few days without a tax disk, how can i go about a replacment, will i need to pay 15 quid for a new one?

As far as I know of, a replacement disc is £7 from the Post Office.

I believe you have to have a visible Tax disc on the bike when its on the roads, so even though you are taxed on paper, you could still get in trouble for not showing it.

As said, replacement discs are £7 from the post office. You won't get in trouble unless a cop pulls you over, and as long as you carry the damaged tax disc holder and damaged tax disc to show them if asked you should be okay. They can check on their system if the vehicle is taxed or not anyway so if they're in doubt they could check. You are legally meant to display your tax disc to the front left of the bike but lots of people carry them in their wallets etc to stop them being nicked and the cops are okay with it.

So, I doubt you'd get in trouble as long as you have the damaged on with you. They could (if you pissed them off really) ask you "well why have you left it so long to look into sorting it out?" but you'd really have to wind them up first.

How long is there left on your current damaged tax disc? If it is only a few months then personally I wouldn't bother getting a replacement. Why don't you do what I do with my tax discs on bikes. Put the holder either somewhere it cannot be seen easily or better still under the removable seat (if applicable). That way the tax is always with the bike if you need to produce it and the thieving fraternity will not be able to nick it or tamper with it. It is very unlikely that you would be asked to produce your tax disc anyway as the cops can easily check if the bike is currently taxed through their computer system. Thus why bother paying for replacement, if they really want to see it show them the damaged one.

I now do what someone on here suggested a few months ago. Make a colour copy of your taxdisc (scan and print using a computer or colour photocopier). Display the copy but keep the real one locked under the seat.

Once the copy is in the holder it is very difficult to tell the difference between it and the original. So difficult in fact, that I'm thinking of trying a similar thing with twenty pound notes... Very Happy

Try scanning and printing one and see what happens Shocked
On my machine, as with many printers and photocopiers now, it voids the copy by stamping the URL of some Bank of England site https://www.rulesforuse.org/ across the note as there are all sorts of restrictions on duplicating money. I am not sure what it picks up on, but would love to know if anyone else can enlighten me. If you save the image as a JPEG and compress it enough you can print it, but obviously the quality is inferior enough that it wouldn't pass as a note anyway.

Oh, and I wasn't trying to break the law, it was all for a spoof note I was trying to make.

I can't remember the name of the technology, but Red and Black the stationery people use something similar - my notebook at work has a page at the front which if you scan it, it'll take you to their website. I guess the money thing is just a variation, instructions hidden in the graphics and all that.

Pretty cool. Apparently the notebook one works if you take a digital photo of it as well - must try it sometime. Smile

I believe that when the money goes back to a bank counting office (Natwest, HSBC etc) they use UV lights to detect counterfeit from genuine, that could well be what the stamp is used for.

The currency detection is done using the same technology as digital watermarks and I believe it is provided by a company called DigiMarc.

The watermarking is embedded in the printed pattern and survives scanning and a certain amount of editing and compression.

However for the watermark to cause disruption to the output you print from your computer requires the co-operation of the photo manipulation software. The latest versions of Photoshop and Paint Shop Pro include the necessary code, version 7 of Paint Shop Pro doesn't...

Experiment for the bored: scan the contents of your wallet and test the different behaviour of Paint Shop Pro 7 versus version 8. Wink

if you photocopy a V5 or an old paper driving licence in black and white on a normal photocopier, it says 'COPY' accross it.

There is a simple way round the currency detection software....dont use it! scan the images useing an old scanner/drivers/editing software (my incredibly old computer is used for this) and when trying to print select print to file, save to disk, and print from your normal printer without the 'orrible sign accross it.

Not that i encourage things like this!! but Iv never seen any programs stopping the copying of tax discs. Paint shop Pro 8 certainly doesnt 'cos thats what i copy mine with.

One point, if you do copy your tax disc to keep the original safe for gods sake remember to carry the orriginal with you!!
