1st Bike For Girlfriend

I am posting this on behalf of my girlfriend who is about to take her mod 2 in a weeks time on a 125 (so any bike she buys will have to be restricted)

She much prefers a 'sit up' riding position against a more forward leaning one. e.g. ER6 against a CBR

She has narrowed the choice down to two bikes in particular which she feels most comfortable upon. A Kawasaki ER6n Vs a Suzuki Gladius.

Any advice on the Pros & Cons of each will be gratefully received by her. (and me )

I'd tend to say they are very similar bikes albeit the engine configuration.

Both will be good for a first big bike, both good on fuel economy and both good at commuting due to their size and gearing. I'd tend to err towards the ER6n as the more suitable bike because it's resale value should be higher (the Gladius is a bit..."special"...in the looks department) and there will be plenty more 2nd hand spares for modifying it if that's what she's after.

Best bet really is just to get her to sit down on both of them and see which one she prefers.

Wouldn't discount some older 250's? They'll not need restricting either so could be an option, more liable to be sit up style and being a tad older slightly smaller

The er6 is a fantastic bike, I have the faired one and can only say its been great fun to ride and easy to get on with as a novice.

The only thing I'd say against it is the suspension can be a bit choppy on uneaven roads if you are pushing on a bit, no probs at more sedate speeds.
Its also not as smooth as a 4 cylinder at low speeds, so I wouldn't recommend it if you are doing alot of town riding and I means lots (think courier) it not bad by any means.

Although if you are going for new then I believe the new 2012 model is improved over my 09-11 version in all areas.

Not ridden a Gladius but when I did my research they came out as a good bike all be it a bit on the femine side for me looks wise but not a problem for your wife I imagine.

My missus test rode both but prefered the ER6 but that was mainly on looks. She was quite happy riding either.

I'm guessing there are much better deals on the Gladius new than the ER6 at the moment. Five hundred cash back and 3% APR over 3,4 or 5 years from Suzuki and I bet you can get a good deal if you walk into the shop with a bag full of fifties.

0% finance on the 2012 er6f but Kawasaki won't give discount on current models with 0% option or wouldn't last year anyway.

You can still get 2011 (previous model) bikes new unregistered and still with 0% finance with the bonus of being able to negoitaite a good discount.

No experience of suzuki finance but I don't do finance unless its 0%

We have a couple of Glads in our garage, one standard and one modified, and my girlfriend enjoys riding hers. That said, at 5'5" she is on tiptoes at a standstill and wouldn't be able to pick it up if her life depended on it.

From my point of view they're actually a very nice ride, not vibey and nice and torquey, relatively speaking. The standard seat is a little firm but the ergonomics suit both my girlfriend and myself (6'4") without any aches or pains.

We bought them solely on price (£4,134 OTR a year ago) over the ER6 as there was bugger all else to really differentiate them on, as you've found.

popped up in a review that the Gladius has a smaller tank. Means more filling up even though its good on fuel.

Mmm, that is small, and they still haven't increased it.

How much riding is she really going to be doing?

If fuel and tank range is a consideration, has she looked at the NC700S? Cheaper and more modern than the ER6 or Gladius, will likely hold its value better: how fast does she want to go?

Nice result, whilst I'd have leaned towards the new ER6n myself (Surprisingly tasty looking in white) I've always thought the Gladius actually looks pretty neat in the flesh once you get rid of the whale penis exhaust
