Well, bike misfired big time few days ago on the way home from work, it was blowing blue smoke out of the exhaust, and backfiring a lot. So I started looking, then found it was venting a lot of fuel through the crank case breather, opening the engine. I found this.

Engine has done circa 40k miles other wise it's mechanically sound for what it's worth

would of expected it to last longer than that.

Must of had a very hard life.......or something went in the engine and shattered to bits

that damage looks strangely familiar to an R1 engine that was being rebuilt in another thread i think. i'll have a look.......

I had a similar problem with that R1 engine recently.It needed new crankcases

So, First look at the clutch on its way out and it looks pretty decent!

The piston from the dead cylinder has also took a battering so will need replacing

Yeah, there's quite a few with this same wear/damage of R1 and R6 up to 2002 so seems there was something going on with the design/manufacturing process.

Not un common. Got a 5eb at work with the same problem. Puts me off buying one as my own bike!

Ok guys, well I have sourced a donor engine with a wrecked tranmission output shaft, so I can start stripping that now and then rebuild a good engine from the 2
