Fuel hose

I might be answering my own question here, but is there an easy way to work out the size of fuel hose needed to fit the fuel tap on a bike? I was thinking about measuring the diameter of the center of the fuel tap spigot with a micrometer and going with that.

Working on the assumption that if it's the same diameter of the thick end it'll be too loose, and the thin end would make it really hard to push on. (I know about heating it up first!)

There's no point in me measuring the old hose as it appears to be a bit of a bodge job. I found out today when it came off that it's just some piece of rubber pipe that was never intended to stop petrol from eating through it.

Fucking hell I've made that sound complicated!!

Just buy half a metre each of a few sizes and see which one works best. It's cheap and sits on a roll at most dealers. The stuff left over will get used for something eventually.

Measure across the top of the ridges on the fuel tap barb and go for the next whole mm down from that.

So, if you measure the barbs at say 6.4mm, get a 6mm hose.

If it needs some encouragement: warm the hose end in a cup of boiling water, then quickly shake and wipe it dry or blow through from the other end before fitting

Halfords sell good thick hose cheap as chips. If it for your GT550 ill bet my last £ that you want 8mm for the fuel and 6mm for the vacume.
