GPZ 500 Pickup Coil

So I just bought a GPZ 500s '96 so it's second gen model and quite like it. However it's got a few problems and one of them is the pickup coil.

I have the spare pickup coil to fit to the bike, however I'm pretty stuck on how to do it and don't actually have a manual on me at the moment.

Am I right in thinking I have to remove the alternator cover to get to it? Do I have to drain the oil to get the alternator cover off and does it need a new gasket to go on it?

Also any information such as torque settings would be appreciated if anyone knew them

Not worked on a late GPZ alternator, but on the early ones a few times. Assuming they are the same for this:-

You probably should use a new gasket, but might get away without it (or with just a minor oil leak).
The cover does hold oil, but with the engine stopped the amount in there will be nominal (ie, the oil level will be below the level of the drain from the alternator cover into the crankcases). On the centre stand you should be fine.
Think the pickups are screwed to the inside of the cover. On the early ones these were VERY tight.

Yeah, this model only uses one pickup whereas the first model uses two I think.

Is the pickup screwed the alternator cover, not the actual rotor itself?

Yes, to the cover (at least on the older ones). Could be bolted to the rotor as that is spinning

Phew, just one more thing. Until I get a manual, where could I get torque settings?

Which torques? Can dig out the figures from the early manual, but to be honest they are not ones I would regard as critical.

Think the screws holding the pickups to the cover are locktited in place. The screws to hold the cover on are fairly small and only need a fairly low torque.
