I bought new insurance through Bennets. The policy says that my bike's not insured if it's nicked within 500m of my garage, so has to be put in the garage (in theory) every time I "pop home" for a minute.

Now, we live on a hill...our drive is on a 20+ degree slope, which I have to carefully reverse my 12-ton Bandit down in order to get it into the garage, which can take a while!

Previous policy insisted the bike was garaged 10pm-6am (fair enough) but this 500m "zone-of-no-insurance" around my garage is really going to piss me off. I might have to change it.

Anyone else got something similar in their insurance terms?

Nothing similar but why didn't you spend the 10mins needed and read the contract before you signed it lol?

Tough luck i guess!

Where's the option for "No, I don't have such a policy and wouldn't touch one with a pole"?

That's why I never put any garage (not that I have one anymore), security devices etc as listed on my insurance because it's Sod's Law that the bike will be nicked that one time I forget to lock it up.

So if your bike is nicked from outside your house, you crowbar your garage open, don't you.

Spot on there! Don't put down any security devices unless you have to.

Garage though, it can affect the prices adversely - I priced up insurance for a few cars a while back and somehow they were more expensive if garaged. I questioned it when I called the insurer and they said something to do with street parking meaning keys don't get nicked so often which is how most modern ones are nicked.

Dunno whether it holds up for bikes though, didn't buy a garage in the end so always used the street for them too. No lock & street parking cost me <£150, guess the 'hyosung' written down the side was a good enough theft deterrent Wink

I get charged double the excess (£400 instead of £200) if it is nicked and is not in my garage...

What a surprise Shocked
Insurance company inserts a clause to screw over policy holder.
Don't worry, even if your bike is nicked more than 500m from your home they'll rewrite the laws of physics and geography to show it was and it'll still be your fault.

Oh and your bike will suddenly be worth a pittance of its resale/purchase price and you ought to be damn grateful the company is offering you that. However, that's a standard condition and code of practice used by all insurance companies.

Being a student AND in employment thankfully means i can pick and choose when i switch insurance. My last quote was:

I am:
Student - up to 1k miles a year, Occasional use only - £190
or
Full Time Employed - up to 10k miles a year, everyday use comuting + buisness - £140

clearly nobody likes students who rarely use motorbikes!
*above comparison was curiosity only, im not a weekend warrior

And yes, I have the same garage clause in my current insurance with Swintons, brought it online and wasn't mentioned till i got the papers through after.

Please give us a more difficult Insurance question next time Sir?

- Park 501 metres away
- Run inside to grab your wallet/item you forgot
- Run back to bike
- If bike is stolen, whoop-dee-doo, insurance payout because they were such idiotic pillocks
- If bike not stolen, repeat until stolen or until desired fitness level attained

My excess goes up from £100 to £500 if my CBR is stolen within 500 meters of my house, should have checked the small print as the RVF insurance contains no damn clause like that.

Then say it was nicked from somewhere else, more than 500 meters away.

Mine is the same, I just garage it religiously.

Mild annoyance but then my bike is a feather light ninja 250, not a 12 ton monster Wink

Im with bennetts and I spcifically asked them about any garage clause. They just said to me that if the bike was at the insured address it had to be garage between 10 and 6.

I wish I had your problem!

No garage and can only get one company to even give me a quote (£630 with £650xs) as no garage (due to worth of bike - 1 year old K1300S), despite extensive security (2x cemented in ground anchors, abus chains, alarm, locked on bike cover, on private land, outside of house in decent area). Sad

see your problem is

cemented in ground anchors: they dont care
abus securit chain: they dont care
bike cover: they dont care
alarm: well they care 5% for this
private land: dont care
outside of house: dont care

in all honesty "in front of house", "ground anchors" (unless branded) and bike cover arent going to be on thier system and therefore they wont bother putting it on your policy

You either don't live in as good an area as you think or the price is for other factors.

I've never paid more than £150 for no security left on the road, admittedly much smaller, cheaper bikes. My monster is kept in a garage but no security and despite me being a non-UK resident nowadays it only costs £187.

What do the comparison sites say if you try a quote with a garage? Like I said with cars, it sometimes goes the other way...
