FZS600 short gearing?

I've just upgraded from the GPZ to a 99Fazer, mint condition, tastefully modified. anyway to me it feels like the gearing is really short. i'm at 5.5/6krpm at 70 in 6th which seems roughly right but when accelerating even in town it feels like i'm up the gears like a 125!
Haven't checked to see if it's been down geared before purchase but doubt it due to it's recent history.

BTW Nothing prepares you for the smoothness of an IL4 engine when you've only ridden singles and twins. also, the smaller fairing has made me totally understand the point in naked bikes. town speeds feel fun!

How's its fuel consumption? I've got short final drive gear ration and it needs 8 liters per 60 miles which would be somewhere like 28.4mpg.

Some thing very wrong there. Mine with standard gearing is 55 with assertive riding and 65+ being good.

Well, I'm no tourist, and every time I sit on a bike, I go like hell Twisted Evil Laughing Short run through the city to warm it up and get on county roads and then flat-out with flames behind the can. Cool

The number I've mentioned was meassured during a flat out run in almost 30°C, It also ate some oil and temp was enormously high, some say it's alright, well this is my very first liquid cooled engine bike, so I just trust them. Smile Odd thing though, the fan runs even at higher speed, I was doing like 45mph and the fan ran, the needel goes slightely above the center of the scale.

There's 15/44 ratio, and it goes 50kph (31.25mph) at 4000rpm on 6th gear. My former '88 GPz550 could do 60mph at 3850rpm. That's why it eats my wallet, but it's fun to have acceleration like this on a bike which weights only 180kg. It still gets over 190kph (118.75mph). Maybe it's faster, once I had the needel over the side stand indicator. Measured top speed is 190 kph, I had two other friends on their bikes, it was at 14000 rpm

I'm gonna get 15/41 ratio next month, I don't have money right now. Smile

6k @ 70 is about right for mine. I'd be very surprised if someones had the gears out to change the others and not 6.

Are you sure you don't just need to get used to the rev limit being higher than the GPZ?

I was thinking of the sprocket sizes not being standard rather than someone having pulled my gearbox apart for no good reason!

I think it might be partly due to the engine sounding more revvy than the GPZ's but then again, the GPZ did 70 at 5.500 rpm, the Fazer does 70 at 6,000. I didn't expect it because it's a faster bike but as you say, it does rev a bit higher.

The cruising speed wasn't what really made me think it's unusual it was how much you have to work the box through town.

Thats because it produces about as much torque as a 2 year old on a big wheel till you hit 6k. I tend to sit in 2nd in 30 limits, I like to make lots of noise.

Seconding this - occasionally I'll switch to 3rd in a 30 if I'm low on fuel and trying to preserve, or it's late at night or something but otherwise in 30 limits it's easier to just stay in second gear.

I'll be very interested to see what it feels like when I'm finally able to remove the restriction, as apparently the bike feels very much the same below 6-7k with or without but is a different beast above it. On restriction you can sort of feel it just start to perk up, before it dies a death and loses all acceleration.

You will get used to what the bike can do - if your having a bumble to work through 30's and 40's and you're in 2nd - that's shit riding tbh

The fazer comes alive post 6k very nicely, doesn't mean you need to sit at 6k past the local school and shops at 30mph though

Sounds about right on the gearing to me. But a 4 is a bit more buzzy which might be confusing your senses.

Works out at about 34mpg (think you were converting using US gallons which are smaller).

30 limits - not 30's and 40's. In fact in Oxford quite a lot of it is 20 limits also - and even in the 30's the average speed is more like 15-25mph due to all the traffic and cyclists.

Besides, 2nd @ 30mph is more like 4.5k rpm, nowhere near 6k.

I've just done a very combined cycle and 100 miles cost me exactly a tenner at 1.35 a litre (ish). That was partly bimbling through country roads, partly motorway (fun speeds and left lane speeds) and partly at speed on country lanes, most of which done 2 up. That's excellent consumption in my eyes

How small is your sprocket? I too get 55 to 65 on a run, maybe down to 50 with the boxes on & fully loaded

Ah and on reflection, it's just the fact that it's more revvy and sounds as though it's revving higher compared to the twin. I'm just so used to riding at very low revs, i'm quite a chilled rider usually so it feels very awkward to sit at higher revs than I'm used to.

On second note.. Fuck me this fazer is fun! pics may follow if i can be arsed

It has 15/44 ratio right now and default ratio should be 15/41, some Japanese manuals even say 15/38, which might be the best, but not for me.

It really isn't. You can put the throttle on from 30 in 6th, but it won't do anything much.

Photos wise, I'd be taking the new style decals off the bellypan, and removing the rad shield (or at least finding one with the right model written on it.)
