Bad Luck

Well in two weeks, me and two of my mates have been involved in a crash with cars, I got pulled out on whilst on the nsr aswell did one of my mates going much faster on a sv650 who is waiting to hear if his bikes a right off and my other mate on an rs125 went into the back of a car who refused to turn right even though the road was clear causing him to lock up, his fault I suppose but still...

Whats going on , just bad luck I suppose but it does make me wonder if biking is for me. But being on a bike is just something else, can't explain the adrenalin rush. Don't know if anyone else gets this.

If we all gave up at the slightest bit of bike related bad luck then well.. we'd all be driving around in those bloody Merc Smart car things!

I've been biking for almost 2 years now and I could probably write a book about all the bad/stupid/unlucky bike related things that have happened to me (or been my own fault...) but thats the fun of it, you learn a lot, experience etc..

You adapt to what you enjoy riding most and views/opinions change, but you'll always be into bikes it's a lifestyle, not just a method of transport..

Don't let it put you off, just learn from it and get on with riding more

Tyral- sorry to hear about the collar bone and yeh it definitely makes you focus more on the dangers, "what if she pulls out" kind of stuff which before I just was ignorant to, It's not untill you have a crash that you realise that not everyone will wait or give way. Just annoys me that their ignorance causes a lot of problems. I mean now my mate on his sv650 doesn't have a bike to ride and has to worry about his pride and joy being a right off.

But what annoys me the most is the insurance side of things, I mean now you have to have witnesses for a firm case and if someone pulls out on you and you go into the back of them it's nine times out of ten your fault even though you were paying attention etc and try and worm out of paying any cost, what are we paying for, anyway this could go on forever but it just annoys me.

Sorry to hear about your accidents

Not wanting to be controversial but I believe that as a rider you have control over your 'luck'. I remember my last accident, now nearly 4 years ago and whilst it was the other drivers fault (he pulled out of a petrol station), I am in no doubt that if I had had more experience, the accident could have been avoided. Since then I have had numerous similar incidences where that one experience helped me avoid further damage.

Having said that every time I get on the bike I do worry, sometimes to the extent that I ride very defensively, taking no chances whatsoever. I do think you develop a 'second sense' where something in your head says there's danger ahead and you slow down and then an incident occurs that if you had been going at your previous speed, you would have been part of it!

If you assume that everyone else on the road is out to kill you and never expect them to do anything other than the unexpected, you'll last a lot longer.

I agree with headlamp on this one - a lot of the 'getting pulled out on' or 'sorry mate I didn't see you accidents' can easily be avoided, and it's down to the rider to do their share in the avoiding. In 5 years on bikes, mostly riding in London, I've had *one* car pull out on me to the point where I almost hit it. Just one. It's not luck, it's seeing the bigger picture and reacting accordingly.

So take the fact that your mates crashed and make it work for you - don't repeat their mistakes.

I must say I agree with you Bendy, we, in the end are responsible for our own safety, but it is difficult to be totally aware and able to anticipate all the time, especially when your learning.

Yup, it's hard going when you're learning but it's still the only way to survive. And it doesn't take long for it to become second nature.

There's always going to be that freak accident and nobody can avoid that, but the majority can be avoided with a bit of forward planning and considering all the eventualities of everything you do out there. And that doesn't necessarily mean riding like a granny.

hey, if you were in a car its quite possible the accidents wouldve happened anyway, its not worth giving up biking for, no way in hell.

I was only thinking that if the car had pulled out on you, yet you hit it's rear then the accident occurred either because you were going to fast, or had not observed the car and considered the stupid things the driver could do.

This is not a knock on you, its a good thing because that means avoiding accidents like that is well within your control and not down to bad luck.

Don't give it up, bikes are great and driven carefully you should be ok.
