Heading back into Dumfries, Some minibus driver ran over a pheasant right in front of me, so I watched it flap out to the side of the road pulling in about 150-200ft down the road, walked back up the road to pick the poor thing up and take it to the vets to get it checked over, put it in my jacket and zipped it up so its head was still out and headed off towards town again...

Got into town with it in my jacket with it casually looking around, headed up to the college to ask for directions to the vets then the cheeky bugger had the nerve to jump out of my jacket and saunter off down the green.... Must of been all right after all... Just hitched a ride into town...

I can't tell if you are telling a bad joke or a bad lie.

Either way, it didn't happen.

It may have done - I patted one on the head last year when it flew into me, so they are trusting, friendly little chaps....

I hit one before in the car. I thought it was coming through the windscreen. I didnt bother going back to look, the slight blood smear on the screen and mass of feathers sorta implied it had exploded on impact. Also, there was a vast amount of dust on the windscreen. Have they not heard of a shower! Hurt

That's your choice to believe that Smile

Like I said, My intentions was to take it to the vets, to get it checked, since it wasn't putting up a fight when I picked it up originally, it was just looking around, quite happily let me zip my jacket up with its head poking out... Quite happily sat while I was waiting on red lights in town, it must of recovered from that 20 mins sitting in my jacket as it wasn't sitting around for long when I stopped at the college..

@Martay if you knew it was a goner then fair enough Smile

This one wasn't "run over" properly.. it just hit the front bumper a bit as it tried to get out of the minibuses way and I saw it flapping away to the side of the road as I was a good 5-10 seconds behind the minibus at 60mph~ so I knew it was alive still Smile

Oh nice one.
It's probably brain injured now and will be unable to orientate properly and land up flying head first into one of the biking frat.

I hope you feel responsible in someway for anything that might happen.

So, how is this different to any other Pheasant? Every single one of them is hatched with a strange desire to do a flying headbutt on fast moving objects.

You had a partially injured, wild animal two inches from your face for 20 minutes...

Of course you did.

Agreed in principle but I was only trying to jar his sense conscience.
Very Happy

I see no problem with that, seen as my face was covered by a helmet... although I doubt it would of been able to each my face anyway as it was sat on my left hip its head was around the bottom of my ribcage, so it could probably of reached my neck... Whats the worst it could of done.. nipped me?

Chances are it would of started panicking before it started biting anyway which would of had it moving around in my jacket and if that started to happen, I would of pulled over...

Why so cynical ? I saw the poor thing get hit, and that it was still alive... at least if didn't escape I would of taken it to the vets to make sure it was ok and for them to deal with it, rather than leave it possibly suffering on the side of the road for how ever long it could of been.

Well I believe you pal Thumbs Up ,why would you lie?.
Twice I've had similar happen, once with a pheasant, and once, on a different occasion, with a barn owl.
The pheasant was snatched up by a vicar , driving behind me, he promptly wrung it's neck, and said, "The lord doth provide"took it home to cook.(I mean, ---sounds improbable, but is true..)
The owl recovered, and flew off, after about 10 mins.
These things do happen,-- but some peeps just live their lives looking to find fault with people who have actually got a life..

Woah.. That's a bit harsh Sir.

Crying or Very sad

You do realise that it would have been far better to keep it in the dark.
That way they remain far more subdued and stress free.

In someways you are lucky it did not decide to try to take flight while you were riding along....

Can't tell if serious Kwaks... Sad

I have a textile jacket, which wasn't fully zipped up to accommodate for the pheasant being in my jacket, I didn't want to suffocate the poor thing.. not to mention I couldn't breath in too deeply or I could feel the bottom of my ribs pushing into the bird...

On the plus side... the pheasant gave me a bit of extra padding, and was giving off quite a bit of heat...

Hmm... True but I did unzip my jacket a bit when I stopped at the college as it was quite warm with it inside, which is probably the reason it took flight then, "Oh I'm recovered and he's unzipped a bit, I can get out now!"

I couldnt of done my jacket up fully with it inside though or I would crushed the poor thing against me which would of made it panic .. or atleast thats how I saw it

Dear MODS, we need a sticky for things to do when an injured wildlife has to be transported.

i.e. Would you zip up to the collar if it was a Red Deer you had in your jacket or leave it half zipped to reduce the effects of heat stress?

Perhaps Stinkers could consult on this matter. (That's if he's not too busy giving bcf the dodge.)

I wasn't leaving it to suffer on the side of the road if it was injured... Not that I got chance to get it to the vets.. Must of known it was going to the vets like, animals seem to run when the V.E.T is mentioned.

I don't care if there is thousands of them, there is thousands of humans too.. would you leave a person at the side of the road if they were hit by a car?

Why would you take an injured dog/cat/hamster to the vet? There are also 1000's of them...
End of the day, it's a living creature which can feel pain.
