Took the old girl out for it's mot the other day and she ran out of petrol more or less on a garage forecourt. Filled her up and she wouldn't go. After fiddling with the fuel tap, off she went and has been fine ever since. Question is, what position should it be in? If I look at the tap from the side, the only position she will run in is withe the tap turned to the left. Pointing downwards nothing, turned to the left nothing. Where should it be?

Sounds like your tap is fucked. Forward is on, back reserve and down is prime. You have vacume carbs and when on or res no fuel should flow unless engine is running. prime will be ok to run just now but get on ebay and look for a kit to fix your tap. You may have just blocked it a bit with the shit at the bottom of your tank but good money is the tap.

check this is your year

Just had a look at your tap and my positions are wrong. down is on, forward is res and back is prime. Fuel should flow in prime with engine off and on. Only flow on other two when engine running. so it looking more like just shit in the tap. Get it out for a clean as you have filters in it. The mesh need a clean every so often.
