Although I'm not sure if you have been there, but since I learned about this place from call of duty 4. I've always been interested and intrigued how it happened and what it would be like to actually view it. Love games life Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas which are similar (even though it wasn't caused by a nuclear warhead).
Also had an interest in old abandoned buildings as well would love to go to Russia just for that reason and take a camera with me get some awesome shots, to see how everything was left in a hurry as Pripyat was abandoned so fast almost everything was left behind.
Call me weird but I still find them cool... link here for interesting abandoned places (clicky) ____________________ CB125>CG125>GN125>ER5>K100RS>R1100RS>K100RS

Think he has. He survived, turned into what we know him as today. Clearly some damage has been done ____________________ Current: 2007 VFR800; Ex: 2001 YZF600R Thundercat

You are a bit early for me! I want to go with my son across russia on bikes when he turns 18. That is 7 years from now!
The route I was thinking was following where my Opa fought in WW2. It would be to pass lessons and values on to him for adulthood, and appreciate the hardships. It be from Galati, across southern ukraine, the crimea, Kerch. From there, we would just continue. Up to Volograd and east. Not to many options east I gather, but with road building, who knows? The idea is just starting in my head.
Pripyat is just to the north and would be an interesting deviation. If you do go, I would be very interested in tips, like getting bikes across borders, places worth seeing etc. ____________________ 2011 KTM 990 Dakar

Well, this is a very interesting post, thank you.
I glanced at it yesterday evening and - since i've done none of this gaming malarky - had to google Pripyat. From the resulting hours of reading on the subject it seems like it would be an intense experience. There does seem to be an odd beauty about the ways nature is reclaiming the town and some of the 'graffiti' imho counts as pretty powerful art.
Having said that, reading the small bit i could stand to read about the children born after the event that have been abandoned in the orphanages was sickeningly horrible.
It would definately be an experience albeit an extremely grim one.
I read several pieces about the details of the actual explosion and the clean-up after. Although the science of what happened was way over my head it was pretty scary stuff. One bit that stuck out was the fact that the concrete they put up to enclose the reactor in 1986 was a temporary measure only designed to last around 20-30 years, so we are fast approaching the upper estimate of it's lifespan. Apparently the construction of a better one over this is way behind schedule and fast running out of money.
The nuclear stuff that escaped and caused the disaster and the ongoing effects was apparently only 5% of what was in there. The other 95% is still in there under a crumbling and inadequate container. There were also a number of scary issues about sealing underneath the reactor. TBH i could have done without finding that out
So yes, if i could i would like to experience a visit to that place. . . . .but since it seems to be a much bigger accident waiting to happen i would want to make it a short one. ____________________ smile and be happy. . . .it gets right on everyone's tits! |

Starts thread. someone calls bullshit. Never returns.
If you have been there (which you have not) show some pictures. I'd love to go there and if I had I would probably have a hard drive full of snaps ready to show to anyone who so much as glanced in my direction. ____________________ Sahf East Winnah 4LYF
