Sure there was a DVLA vehicle check form on their website. It was free and gave you details of the last MOT and whether the vehicle was registered as damaged (cat C etc).

Can someone put me out of my misery and remind me what the link was?

Thanks, yeah the DVLC link and there's also another free 'MID' one for insurance. The DVLC site used to allow me to check history of any vehicle with just the registration. Well at least if it was tax'd and it's current status.
