As you will already know if you read my posts... i want to know everything available to me before i buy a "big bike" and before that i have to pass my test... but thats a minor detail. Anyway, which would you reccomend? i have seen quite a few cbr 600's and i have to say i like them. Thing is i have seen way to many VFR's and i just wanna be different. is there much of a difference? would both be just as fun, keeping in mind i will be restricting the bike Crying or Very sad

There are more CBR's around than there are VFR4's

I would reccomend something even cheaper than those such as a Suzuki GS500E. You can get a vaguely decent one for about £800 and they handle OK. About the same power as a VFR4 and more practical for riding to uni every day. And they aren't /amazingly/ common.

Otherwise why not try a GPZ550 or something older like that. Smile

No doubt you've been told this numerous times already, but the likelihood of you dropping the bike or something else is quite high to start with, so something that'll take novice abuse without emptying you wallet every single time might be a plan.

well ive heard all that before, but after going a year and a half on a fully derestricted moped and not even falling off is some achievement with all those stupid boi racers around. i rekon i can last a while on a 600 before falling off, there arent many fast roads around here anyway. And i aint that skint! i hav a 3 grand budget, all in all,. thats insurance, licence and bike... but i might be able to lend some from the parents Very Happy really all i want to know is performance wise.. which is superior?

It's not the fast roads that do it, it's the gravelly junctions and the slippery roundabouts... Rolling Eyes

performance wise. do you plan to keep them restricted for long. i have an nc21 and i had that restricted (also move off a 50cc geared a month or 2 ago) and that was pretty fast for me, and when i derestricted it it was to fast for me, took me a few weeks to achully be able to control the bike under power. but now after 3 or 4 months im board and want to go faster (although i wont as ive already got myself a court summons for me licence and im getting done over some bs i didnt do).

the 400 will corner better, and probably accel better depending on what the weight to 33bhp ratio is.
if you are going to derestrict it id get a 600 as it would be better for the long run. the cbr600rr is a hell of a lot faster than my vfr400r nc21 but that is comparing an old old 400 with a brand new 600

thing is, an old 400cc will cost you a lot less all round than a 600 will, cheaper insurance and cheaper running costs (i think)

In my opinion going froma ped to a 600 is crazy. Your jumping up to one hell of a bike, a cbr is probably one of the quickest 600's around, behind a gixxer of course, but you really may end up regreting it because even though you say you will take it easy until you get used to it, chances are with all that power at your hands, you won't.

Being 17 years old getting a cbr600 will eat up majority if not all of your budget. The insurance company will not see the restriction.
You havent had much experience on bikes so I would start smaller and work your way up. Dont want to kill yourself before you reach 20.
By the way the VFR400 is a fantastic bike and I cannot fault it in any way.
