I've got a 'Get On' session on weds & gonna book CBT this aswell. I've js clicked on I have no over the ankle boots. What's a cheap alternative to motorbike boots? Just a cheap pair of leather shoes/boots? Gonna need to get something tomorrow so can someone share a link to some they have bought or recommend please.

Thanks Thumbs Up

Wearing brand new shoes might not give you the feel you need.

Are you doing a automatic or geared bike?

Automatic and you can pick up a pair of boots from Barratts or Priceless shoes, maybe even Primark if you have one of those near you.

Geared and you might want something that you can feel the gear peg.

Hope thats a start of where you can potentially look.

Hiking type boots will do if you have any.

Or check army surplus/charity shops for boots, any combat style would do.

Once you've saved you can then invest in a decent pair. Order of priority IMO helmet, boots, trousers, gloves then jacket.

Gloves should be higher up this list. Arguably second. Generally will be the first point of impact, plus life without functioning hands would suck.

I can't find the article I'd read which brought me to the above thinking some while ago, but this one is similar. It basically shows a % of trauma broken down by body area, e.g. Head, upper torso, legs, feet, hands.

It really is a minefield of opinion, which generates great debate. However, it doesn't detract from the fact that it's expensive getting your first kit and you need to prioritise for yourself what order to buy things in.

That matches my recollection of an article by some professor chap who also noted that injuries tend to start at the feet and work upwards. He chose to wear para boots, as I recall.

That's not to disagree with the assessment that the severity and consequences of hand injuries may be higher, but in terms of likelihood, it's feet, legs, then hands.

And that implies that an armoured jacket and denim jeans is exactly the wrong way round, by the way, we only tend to do that because it's convenient and doesn't look daft down the [local gathering place].

I wore and wear something very much like these for £20:

These are similar and cheaper at £14.97

Not as ideal as proper motorcycle boots I'd agree, but more than good enough and you can use them for other tasks as well, I wear them all the time, not just when I'm on the bike.

I've used army surplus boots for biking before, usually cheap and will cover the ankles with no bother. If you're planning on riding often then get the gear in place sooner rather than later. Thumbs Up

I didn't have any boots for my GetOn session and just wore some work shoes.

I decided to buy some cheap leather walking boots for about £20 (on sale at Debenhams) for my CBT but I doubt I'll wear them much as I've bought some motorcycle boots from Hein Gericke for about £80 (after 25% off euro offer).

You'll probably be better off just heading down to your local bike shop and trying on a few pairs and spending ~£50-80 now instead of £20 then £50-80 again when you start more lessons.

Yes and no. If you're planning on doing purely pleasure rides, there and back again, then motorcycle specific boots would be great.

But I mostly use my bikes to get somewhere, and goretex lined army surplus boots are ideal for me. Waterproof, cheap, grippy, good on and off the bike, wear-anywhere footwear.
