Hi

Does anyone use a cable lock in addition to any other security you already use.

I usually put a chain and padlock around my from tyre to an immovable object. But I'm thinking they could just unbolt my front tyre and wheel it away.

If you do use or can suggest a cable lock, do give me brand names and possible prices paid.

Can you not get the chain through the frame of the bike?

I've not seen a cable lock that stands up to much more than a pair of scissors.

Jup. 8mm plastic coated cable from local hardware shop; unbranded, £799, & an £8 padlock.

'Lassoo' the end and you have almost twice the 'length' to loop round the frame and tie-down to some convenient street-furnatire like a lamp-post or railing.

Light and easy to carry, gives that '"You wont wheel THIS away" or "Lift onto a VAN!" so easy 'protection'.

Yeah, you'd lop through it in nano-seconds with a pair of cheap bolt croppers.... So what! Some-one that is coming 'tooled' up ent going to be put off by much anyway...

Certainly gives you 'more' than a disc-lock alone, or a heavy chain thats doing same job, not strapped down to anything, becouse you cant reach!

At home; goes through both wheels and the frame while the chain ties bike to ground anchor.... just a bit 'extra' to stop them trying to take bits off!

I wouldn'#t waste money on a very high price cable, nor a 'cheap' thin cycle-lock, but as a portable chain substitute, you are more likely to use.... and an 'added' layer of protection, YEAH... USEFUL and probably rather under-rated

Something more is better than nothing.

Any extra form of protection should be good.

I agree with Teflon Mike, if bolt cutters are being carried around, then they are out on a mission anyway.
Should hopefully stop the opportunist who might be thinking 'oh look ive got a spare wheel for that at home but the rest of the bike i'll have thanks'.

Is this any good?

I have a pretty shit one to lock my helmet to my bike. I wouldn't actually think of securing something with it though but as has been said above, every little helps Wink

Please be aware i'm already using a 13mm steel chain (heavy m£$£$$%^) and padlock...... oh and a ground anchor when i'm at home.

And sometimes a disklock when i can be bothered to take it out!!

The cable lock would just be additional round frame and back or front wheel, whatever isnt on the big chain at that time.

This was more about when i park it away from home.

Sounds good to me.
On my road bicycle I used to use a D-lock for the rear wheel and frame, then use a cable to secure the front wheel.

A chain would of course be better, but you have to think about the practicality of lugging it around everywhere.

I had a bicycle (not even a fancy one) stolen that was locked up with a cable lock.

I definitely wouldn't entrust the security of my bike to one!

Still, better than nothing I suppose.
