It all depends how much the bike is worth, obviously fully comp is better, it covers you if you smash into someone but if your bike is worth the same or less than your excess its pointless.
Like me my bike is worth around £600 and my excess if it got nicked or i smashed it is around 4 - 500 so would be pointless me claiming anyway, so 3rd party only for me.

What about excess cover though for fully comp with an excess as much as the bike cost?

Or is that a scam no one has let me in on lol

Maybe iv misread your post but do you know what insurance excess is?
It means when you make a claim that's how much YOU have to pay, so if your bike is valued at £800 and your excess is say £500 your only going to get £300 if your bike is nicked.

Yeah sorry I probably didnt word that very well...

what i mean is excess insurance, so a separate company will "insure" your excess for a fee, so if you ever have to claim they repay most or all of the excess you paid to your insurer depending on how much you pay them (like £50 for the year)

Friends of mine have this but have never had to claim so not sure on if its actually good.

Hmm never actually heard of that, suppose it all depends how much it costs really.

Insurance excess insurance? Is there insurance excess insurance insurance, too? Heh Wink.

To me it sounds like a whole bunch of other ways the insurer can take your money and then try and wiggle out of paying.

What's an insurance company going to pay out for an 04 cbr125 - 800-900 maybe? The increased cost of the premium, plus the excess, you may as well not bother. Pocket the money, keep your bike in a safe place and don't ride like a dick and hopefully come renewal time you're quids in Thumbs Up

I'll try to help by giving you a run down of an experience I had, maybe it will help clarify things for you.

When I passed my CBT, I brought a brand new CBF125, as it was brand new I insured it fully comp, I was unsure what an excess was and assumed the higher the better (BIG MISTAKE) It was a mandatory excess of £500 to which I (STUPIDLY) added a £500 voluntary excess.

Within a month I had an accident, took a bend too fast and pulled the front brake, locking the wheel up which sent me careering into a parked Merc, I was left in hospital for a foughtnight.

My insurance covered both the damage to the Merc and to my bike, yet the damages to my bike didn't tally up to a grand (which is what I'd have had to pay if I had claimed it, you pay your excess, the insurance covers the rest.) so it was POINTLESS me claiming through my insurance, which also meant going fully comp was pointless for me.

Now had my bike been stolen, as it WAS (isn't any more) worth £2300, had I claimed I'd have received a cheque from my insurance company for £1300 (value of the bike MINUS the excess)

I'm now covered TPF&T with an excess of £300 and a bike worth £1500 if I'm lucky.

Hopefully that will help explain it a bit and help you make a decision.

HTH Very Happy

Err wouldn't that be the rather more convoluted way of getting an insurance policy, and putting "Zero" on the proposal for voluntary XS, and then reading the small-print carefully, and choosing the one that has "zero" compulsory XS, and then paying that bit extra for it?!?!?
