Somewhere safe and clean for a lid to be placed when being discriminated against at petrol stations.

I don't really have a problem. It either gets hung on the mirror or I sit it on the gloves on top of the front of the tank/clocks area. The mirrors is usually safe for either the little CBR or the SV, without any fear of it falling off.

If a supermarket is for any reason being an arse I stop shopping at them, as they ain't having my money if they've got an attitude. It's an easy solution.

That's a rubbish petition Laughing

In some cases helmets can cost up to ÂŁ500, yet we are persistently told we must remove them and either balance them on the seat where they can be blown off, or we must put them on the dirty floor to soak up water and spilt fuel (that can also weaken the structure of the helmet)

Is it just me that slings it over the mirror, or has the apparently rare dexterity to stick my hand through the front with the visor up and keep it hooked around the crook of my left elbow while filling up?! It's not difficult.

Very rare that I ever take my lid off when filling up... I purposely keep it on, just to test if the staff ask me to remove it, and I haven't been asked yet.

On the rare occasions that I take it off to fill up, the Bandit mirrors protrude fairly far out, and are more than capable of supporting the lid without risk of it falling off...

Ride up, dismount, enter filling station and place helmet on counter. Ask staff to confirm you are over 16, tell them to put your helmet somewhere safe and dry while you fill. Exit to bike, yellow tape off the aisle you are using.Fill bike, with small amounts and regular stops to let it settle.Close tank and use paper towels to wipe down tank abd clean bottom of shoes.Remove yellow tape. Enter station and pay, retrieve helmet.Exit to bike. Re enter station, buy some mints.Exit station and ride off. As you ride out, mate rides in and repeats process. Point made.

If attendant ever tells you a nozzle contains thermalite the emergency fuel stop is on the wall outside.

Never been asked to take my helmet off.
When I have anyway, I've used the mirrors, bars, tank, place on the petrol pump or many other places appropriate at the time.

A specific rack would make it that bit easier for people to nick them if you leave it there while going in.

An upturned hook like bar that you can stick your helmet on at the side of the pump would be fairly ideal. That being said, I have no issue with taken my helmet off anyway, the mirror holds it nicely.

As opposed to taking off mirrors, bars, tank, petrol pump? Confused Thinking

IIRC the 'official'* line on helmets is you should not place on mirrors or seat as they can fall or be knocked off. Same with placing on the ground as can be contaminated or again get knocked. Same as shouldn't place gloves inside helmet or use it as a shopping basket.

In practice however even the police park their helmets on the blue beacons. Given how much crud and road dirt could be on them then I guess it's their choice. Plus they could be knocked off. In short a bit of double standards.

Also I believe helmet placed on floor behind broken bike can signify in need of assistance. Not sure how universal that is though.

Rather than a rack a simple hook could suffice. Cheap and cheerful. Although I'm sure health and safety guru may say that is a hazard and a danger. I know the ST1100 has curved hooks under the seat designed for helmet storage (when seat locked back on helmet is secured and without cutting straps cannot be removed).

Just a thought, when with pillion at petrol station has anyone been told the rider andpillion needs to remove helmets?

Thumbs Up

The reason for not placing helmets on larger mirrors is that the mirror could damage the foam I believe.

However, I don't see it should be a problem to place it appropriately.

Most bikes I've had have had under seat hooks for helmets. Though it's much more likely my tank or seat would be clean than the side of my bike where it would generally hang (though may be able to get it on the seat.)

some petrol station staff are a bit power trippy. i used the same one everytime i had to fill up and the staff were always nice, didnt bother their arse about the helmet as i have a flip front and had it open whenever i was in.

one day i got this completely arrogant woman though, to the extent she cut off the fuel before i began, and never bothered to even look at me to ask me to remove my helmet. lead to a bit of a debate telling her to step off her high horse and that if she had bothered to ask, i would have removed it no problem.

drove off and i happened to find a cheaper petrol station though, whose staff are all lovely Thumbs Up

Honestly, while I'm all for causing as much quid-pro-quo pointless inconvenience to kiosk mongs, I doubt we're going to win this one. Their gaff, their rules, and I can't see any angle of attack that might work.

It seems the petrol stations play the rules and regulations card first.
So as for angles how about...
Arrow Old fashioned customer care and service
Arrow Duty of care
Arrow Health and Safety
Arrow Discrimination against a section of road users

Just some thoughts.
Have to say I'm trying to see both sides as personally I haven't had any problems. It looks to me like another of the little things that chip away at our liberties for the sake of some common good. Once you notice they've all added up to something major it'll be too late. I am reminded of the saying "All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.".

I find that at most stations the pumps are such that I can pop my lid on the pump. If not I just hang it on the mirror.

I don't really see why peeps get a bee in their bonnet about taking their lid off at fuel stations.

I wouldn't say its decrimiation either as you'd have to prove they are treating you differently to everyone else. For instance if a car driver pulled up in a balaclarva would they be required to remove it?

As for religious garments then I think they have special dispensation.

A clear example of discrimination.

Not a clear example as it only shows what their ploicy is on helmets and doesn't give any information about how they would treat someone else covering there face.

Its quite simple, to be discrimination one has to be treated differently to another without good reason.

Merely asking someone to remove their helmet doesn't constitute discrimination.

If you want to talk "discrimination", you'll have to pick one of those criteria. "I'm Scotch and therefore fuck-ugly" might not wash.

If you want to talk "discrimination", you'll have to pick one of those criteria.

So firstly point the use of "such as" would indicate this is not a definitive list, just some suggestions. Second point is aren't bikers always told they're a minority group when it comes to policy/influence/planning/etc.

Not saying I'd want to talk "discrimination" it's just there does seem to be some built in wriggle room Wink

Mine happily sat on my seat, wasn't worried about it being knocked off. Just be a little careful not to swing anything into it.. And it being blown off? I can't see that happening.. But maybe? :s
