With the rule changes coming into effect in Jan 2013 you wuold be better getting the Restricted license sooner rather than later or you will be stuck with a 125 until your 21+.

Surely, if you pass your Theory, Mod 1 and Mod 2 at 17yrs old, before Jan 2013 you can ride WAY above 125cc - you'll just have to restrict it to 33bhp for 2 years. It will feel like a rocket compared to a 125 and will keep you into riding until you can graduate to full power.
Or can you only have a restricted license when you're 19? I don't know because I got into biking at 44 yrs old, so have no experience of these rules for you young 'uns.

Edit - I've just been on the DSA website and 19 yrs of age only comes into it from 19 Jan 2013. If you get it done before then you can ride a 33bhp bike for 2 years, then take the strangler off it or get a bigger bike. Happy days - just get ti done ASAP.

The theory test is all about the highway code. If you have a smartphone, there are good practice apps, or there are free tests in the interwebs. The hazard perception is a video with developing hazards on it, and you click when you see it start and a few times during - again, there are practice videos and apps for this also. It's not hard, and the people who say that they failed because they clicked "too soon, because I saw it coming way earlier than they think I should" are delusional. Only fighter pilots or F1 drivers can click it too soon for the software.
The training school will give you all the advice you need, just tell them what you want to achieve, and they'll get you there. Good Luck!

3rd Directive Licence Laws / Impending Licence Changes

If you get your licence before January, you'll get licence under cirret rules, a full A Group with 2 year 33bhp restriction.

Pass after you will be on a 125 until you are 24 virtually.

My advice GET A 125

TIME ON A TIDDLER IS RARELY WASTED!

Get your theory & Mods done on it. It'll probably be 'as cheap' as trying to do it on a School Bike and it will give you something to ride in the mean time.

Yes, there is reason to hurry, but DONT RUSH - Rushing is fast way to get hurt on bikes.

AND... post tests; you will be subject to New Drivers Act for two years, length of your 33bhp probation.

Do anything 'daft' from missing or illegal L-Plate, to speeding, or heaven forbid 'loose' a power restrictor, they dont 'Ban' you, they take your licence OFF you and send you BACK to a provisional to start all over for 6-points.

So protect that licence, and I'd reccomend riding out the year on the 125, then progress cautiousely to something 100% 33bhp complient.

You'll be 19 and off the 33bhp restrict and NDA and ahead of the game by potentially two tests and with 'secure' licence in your pocket.

So play it safe, 'hurry' but dont rush, and while watching the road ahead, keep your mind on the longer destinanation, in two years time, being restriction and New-Driver-Act 'Free'.

True Dat. Good advice. I'd forgotten about the NDA; it could be a factor if you aren't smart.

I'd go for full licence as soon as you can really, with the changes. ride a 125 for a few months to get used to it by all means, but if you've ridden other geared smaller bikes that might help too

The Highway Code has sections on administering CPR, and the environmental benefits of trams?
