Usually the intervals at a minimum are: 600 Miles >> 4000 Miles and then a service every 4k miles. However, modern day bikes seem to have a longer interval, sometimes at 6 or 7.5k. The work required per service differs depending on the mileage.

As for costs, how long is a piece of string?

According to my Haynes Manual (Honda Hornet)

Every 600 Miles
- check, adjust, clean and lube chain.
Every 4000miles or 6months
- Check and adjust idle speed.
Check brake pads
Lube throttle/choke/clutch/Brake Lever/Pedal/ Sidestand Pivots
Clean air filter housing drain valve
Check and adjust clutch and clutch cable.

Every 8000 Miles
- Change oil and filter
Check and adjust throttle and choke cables
Check and adjust spark plugs
Check and adjust Carb sync
Check fuel hose
Check cooling system
Check condition of PAIR system hoses(?)
Check the brake system
Check and adjust headlight aim.
Check and adjust clutch and clutch cable
Check the centrestand, sidestand and switch
Check the condition of the drive chain slider
Check the suspension
Check the condition of the tyres and wheels
Check and adjust the steering head bearings
Check the tightness of all nuts, bolts and fasteners

Every 12,000 Miles
- Renew air filter
Change brake fluid

Every 16,000 Miles
- Renew spark plugs
Check and adjust valve clearances

Every 24,000 Miles
- Change the coolant

That's all from the scheduled section of the book. I can't confirm it's accuracy other than that's what it says in the print Thumbs Up

Ballpark.
Local independent guy that I trust charges around £40 an hour. Others charge more or a little less. Cheapest I know is £30/hour. Main dealer prices for bike work are higher, sometimes a lot (cars more so, e.g. Volvo it's around £80). Depends where you live and how much they can think they can get away with. Don't get me started on how they charge that much and have the day release trainee do the work (yes I know we all have to learn but... Rolling Eyes ).

Actually finding a mechanic you can trust, don't feel ripped off by, would actually go back to and recommend to friends and know they'll still be your friends is a good move. I'm sure the guy I use cuts me some slack as he knows he'll get repeat work and any recommendations.

Main dealer charged me 85 quid for an oil and filter change and check over as per the service guide.

For kawasaki in any case if you read the service routine various things require check or change at various intervals or every 12 months. So even if you do low miles like me the bike must be serviced and checked atleast every 12 months.

You see lots of bike for sale with "full service history" which have only been done on miles and not each year if required. So not really full history by rights.

Service cost varies depending on what needs doing but generally labour costs are between 40 and 60 quid an hour.

I did oil and filter changes on mine and dad's bikes yesterday. Using 8 litres of Silkolene Comp 4 it came to a total of 80 quid for both bikes.

My 4k one is due soon, I'm fairly sure that it's £165 at Honda (!!!! how?!)

The bike has a full Honda service history, anyone have any clue what the downfall on eventual sale value would be if I did it myself?

I was wondering this earlier, is there anything on a service schedule that your average home mechanic couldn't or isn't equipped to do, apart from valve clearances?

At some point I think I've done most other things, just wondering for when my Daytona gets to its next big service.

I do everything myself. Helps that i have a background in mechanics, but 99% of bike servicing/repair work is well within the capabilities of the average owner.

Obviously if it's still in the guarantee period you have to get the sevicing done by a dealer to keep the warranty valid. What classes as a valid dealer seems to be rather a moot point depending on the manufacturer, but I always take mine back to where I bought it as I trust them (they charge me a left bollock but they DO do what they say).

Another thing is if you are going to trade your bike into a dealers as part ex they want a service history or they will knock down the price. (I'm sure once they have it they just stamp the book up anyway to make it look good for the next punter Rolling Eyes )

Once it's out of guarantee then do it yourself. 90% of servicing is well within the capabilities of most people once you have a reasonable tool kit.

One thing I would stress, don't buy spanners/sockets for £0.99 from the local car boot unless you know what you are doing. Cheap crappy tools can leave you in a worse position then taking it to a dealers for the service. If you take it in to repair your fuck ups, be prepared for anal raping.

My 2008 GSXR 750 cost £170 for service and MOT, plus they picked up and returned my bike Thumbs Up

fair enough. I can do most other things competently enough, having done oil & filter, C&S, fork seals, brake rebuild, new clutch etc before but fiddling about with the innards of an engine is a bit daunting. Checking them might be ok, adjusting them is not something I fancy doing.

Just picked the 636 up from the garage and asked how much a Major service is - im almost at 24k miles. He said near the £300 mark.
I dont mind paying that as i certainly wouldnt trust myself.

Altho, I feel he is trying to screw me out of more money for simple things Confused
