Passed my A2, now what?

HI Guys,
Last year I passed my A2 license and was told Could ride any bike after two uears. The examiner took my driving license and told me a new one will come to the door.
Sure enough, it came and it says I cannot go above 33bhp.
What happens after two years?
Do I have to send them my driving license again to swap it out for another one?

You're supposed to send it back, but you don't have to, I think if you do you lose two years of holding a full license.

I'm personally not sending mine back.

No, you do not. Whether the DVLA mongs think you're "supposed" to or not isn't germane: there's no requirement to do so.

Your entitlement upgrades automatically. Your current license shows exactly when that should happen, and anyone with half a brain can work it out.

However, you're at risk of hassle - up to and including bike seizure - from some undertrained Plod thinking he's got an easy collar and refusing to back down. You should get it all sorted eventually, but for your own peace of mind, you can get a new copy without the restriction.

As Jersum notes though, the DVLA will steal 2 years of experience from you by listing the new "From:" date as being when the restriction was removed, i.e. 2 years after you passed your Mod 2. Mad

This can cause you problems with insurers if you try to stick to your pass date, since they seem determined to be vague (or just incorrect) about what they're actually asking regarding our license categories and durations. You'll have to make your own call about that on a case-by-case basis when you upgrade.

And never, ever send a license back to the DVLA. Just tick the "lost" box, so that you can "find" it again if necessary. It costs exactly the same either way.

At the date of test pass + 2 years, the restriction code is automatically invalid. It's not worth sending off for a new licence, as you will receive a date of A category at two years later to when you actually passed it. Even though you passed your test two years prior, it helps to stay with the old one, just for 10 years, because every decade you have to renew anyway, and by that time, missing 2 years won't make any difference. It's just easier insurance wise to have the licence to say you passed the date you did, even if you do have a pass certificate too.

Besides, it costs to get a new licence.
