Decent Helment Camera..... to catch those Smidsy's :-)

Hi

Does anyone use a good helmet camera?

How have you secured it to your helmet.

Currently I am using a 808 #11 keychain camera that I have velcro'd to the top of my helmet. This works ok but the battery only lasts for abt 10 mins before it cuts off

Need something that will last at least an hour of recording time.

Any ideas.

ps, nothing expensive though, ie less than £100 would be great.

You could do what I do with my 808 and slip one of these in your jacket pocket, with a USB cable connecting the two. That will power the 808 for 9 or 10 hours continuous recording before it needs a recharge itself.
You might need to improvise a windproof enclosure, the way I think you're using it, but that's not hard.

You can get much cheaper battery packs if you only want a couple of hours recording time.

Go pro is the best by far, but pricey

I use the Hero HD, fantastic bit of kit. Good battery life and fantastic quality. Able to get a long life battery for it too which lets it last about 4 hours roughly.

If you are worried about being SMIDSY'd, then there's an awful lot of stuff MORE important than a camera to show the feds..... "SEE it WAS my Right of Way" is all well and good, but small satisfaction while you're sat in traction having done a super-man over his bonet into a bit of street furniture!

If you have a spare £100 to spend on 'protection' go get some extra lessons, or buy some better boots or something!

I've got most of the padding and boots.

Extra lessons would be good but i'll wait until after I've passed my tests.

So far I like to think i'm doing an ok job in missing them by pre-empting their movements.

The Go Pro's / Hero's etc just look massive and how do they attach to the helmet. I cant see any straps or the like. Screws??

On go pro there is loads of fixings, here is the chest strap of me on my mx bike https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=tKh9DUvNKGE . , if you get the motorsport cam you get alot of different fixings, suction pad , sticky pads ect, depends what bike you have, I have a r6 and I stick the sticky pad on the triple clams so the camera is facing out the screen, you can also put sticky pads of helmet or suction pad, they won't come off there really good stuff, go pro are always bringing different things out to up grade the cameras .

Just saw on Scan you can get a Veho Muvi for £54. OK, so its the slightly ghey gumball 3000 edition, but it comes with various mounts etc. One person on here put it over his nose inside his lid, and another put it on the padding on one side of their lid.

I know the thread title says helmet camera but is there any advantage on mounting a camera direct to the bike?

I can understand with a helmet camera you're likely to video where you're looking and you tend to look at the point of impact.

However in terms of recording what's happening in front of the bike with a permanent power connection?

That said not sure as in this thread - video of accident click here - a bike mounted camera would have caught the accident and the result. Hence my question.

The problem I've found with all the cameras I've used is the microphone being overwhelmed by wind-noise. In one case it eventually blew the mic. Even the £500 bullet-cam setup I had, with a protected remote mic, had problems with noise.

External mic is the only way to go to avoid wind noise, all you can do is hide it in your jacket somewhere and use wind shields on it. I use a sock

Contour is better size-wise although lacks the ability to add an external mic. GoPro is smaller but the mounting system they use mean it looks a bit daft stuck on a helmet. Maybe just stick to mounting on your bike as a lot of the HD cameras are quite a bit bigger than those non-hd spy camera type things.
