Hi all,

I'm getting more conflicting advice but this time on waxing my chain.

Man who recently serviced it: "I've cleaned it up and put some protection on it so it'll never need waxing or anything, if it gets dirty just rinse it off but that stuff i've put on will do it until it's next service no problems".

Friend at work "I wax mine every 500 miles or so, about every two weeks"

Can anybody confirm which is best here (or maybe both are correct dependant on what's applied to the chain I guess).

Thanks again.

You sure your mate is using wax and not normal lube?

I would expect a wax application to last longer than 2 weeks.

It depends on how much you ride and the conditions. I never use wax, but lube, since I ride a lot of gravel. I lube every 2 tanks, which is 500 km, often 1 day.

I also take a chain brush and degreaser and strip the gunk off periodically

Wax?

Never waxed my chain, seems odd and like it'd make more crap stick to it

I lube it most weeks, and scrub any crap off with a wirebrush Thumbs Up

Wax mine, no grime to stick to it since I have a full chain guard Dance!

You can't really over-wax a chain though can you? Wouldn't hurt to apply some every now and again.

I can't see any lube lasting for that long (i.e 4000 miles between services). If it did we'd all be using it.

Every 500 miles with the occasional scrub in paraffin seems much more sensible.

Err yes I do have an oring type..

So wirebrush = bad
WD40 = bad
Engine oil = bad

What else is bad for chains? Laughing

I got a set of 3 'wire brushes' one is brass, one is steel and one is nylon

Stick with the nylon I will then.
I've only cleaned it once with the brush mind you, I check it regularly and there's been no real need

Had pleasure wasting an hour or two at the weekend waiting for a download to finish, cleaned up my engine, resprayed the exhaust, sprayed the bottom of the forks.

Next step: Oil change!
I can't get the fucking sump plug bolt out, it's tighter than a nun's arsehole

Broke my cheapo socket set, now it just spins Thumbs Down

A wire brush is your friend. Never go far without it and chain lube.

A wire bush will fuck the seals in a chain, faster than an eskimo can.

Sorry. It is not real metal wire. Just stiff non abrasive bristles. Angled. Like the one in the pic above.

I also lube the chain from the inside, so as you ride, the lube works outwards into the chain.

Those of you without a centre stand, lubing and cleaning is a pain in the arse.

Not really, there's a secret method for lifting up a bike with only a side stand Laughing Wink

I have a centre stand though, I lube from the inside and on the outside actually, also with the engine running in gear with the backwheel spinning, like a daredevil Exclamation

My chain looks nice and sheeny shiny clean now, wanna get me some decent spray lube though, been using my mates spray lube otherwise it's my crappy 3 in 1 drop oil stuff

Not really, we have a thing called a paddock-stand.

You probably still use 'darkies' though, which tends to keep newer technology from coming into the market.

I cleaned my chain for the first time on the weekend. I used paraffin, rags & toothbrush to get the crud off, then oiled the links with 90W gear oil. Straight forward Smile

Service interval for the chain on my bike is 600 miles, but I did it after 400 because of the shitty weather.

I'd have thought the opposite, what with wax being hard and shiny as opposed to soft and sticky.

Two things.

1. Engine oil is excellent for chains if you have run out of everything else, mostly because it will do a job and its free but it will fling. A lot. Gear oil is better, Muc off chain lube seems to last pretty well for me too.

DO NOT BUY HOLTS CHAIN LUBE YOU WOULD BE BETTER OFF USING MONKEY SPUNK. It is that bad. Horrible evil green shit that sprays everywhere and lasts less time than I would if I was inside Amber Heard.

2. Are you sure you were turning it the right way? Like really sure, especially as you are doing it upside down and everything? Sump plugs shouldn't be done up that tight in the first place, for fear of cracking the sump.
