Medium length story short, half way round a roundabout the back end slips out and i lose it, fell off and slid to the curb.

It was wet and there was some diesel in the road, i was going a bit slower accordingly but didn't manage to miss the damned diesel.

Damage to me: Slightly aching ankle but apart from that NOTHING.

Damage to the Hornet: Mirrors smashed, bars bent, radiator cap leaking, footpeg bent, exhaust cover scratched and speedo light out a bit.

Just annoyed that it's happened, now to get the damge fixed and get back out there Thumbs Up

Cheers to the chap who stopped and helped me get her off the road!

You know I did the same thing for my first off, also driving slower than I would normally, which I think is what caused it!

need to put the throttle on coming out the turn to keep your grip else you end up sliding like a bar soap in a prison shower, I think Thinking

Yeah, i just felt the back starting to slip then it just went. Tried coming off the throttle but was too late :/

That's what I mean, would coming off the throttle would give you less traction rather than more?, if you gunned it coming out the bike might have stayed upright? I'm just trying to think of the physics of it to avoid it happening Laughing

That may have actually been the wrong thing to do. Chopping the throttle on a motorbike isn't something you should do because it can cause instability.

A back end slip is usually controllable; it's the front end slips that make you hit the deck.

Of course I don't know the exact situation you were in to comment, but a bit of countersteering always seems to fix it for me when I get a bit of back end wiggle. The sooner you react the better. Smile

The most important part about cornering on a motorbike though is to just be smooth. Understanding countersteering is a big bonus too though. Thanks to understanding countersteering I now have no troubles braking hard whilst in a corner (front and rear) whilst keeping my line.

When I first got my bike I locked up the rear braking too hard. I ended up with the bike sidewards almost with me leaning the bike at an angle, drifting it down the road almost. To anyone watching it must have looked like a stupid stunt, but I was bricking it. Laughing Thankfully got it under control though. Not done that since. Laughing

No, but I need to send an email to UPS as one of their drivers is driving around with diesel pissing out of his tank, and I mean properly flowing out, mentioned it to him and he shrugged it off....Could have punched him.

I would have taken his keys and called the police and been more than happy to 'defend' myself if he tried to stop me.

If a biker died due to his willful negligence he'd be rightfully liable for a charge of manslaughter.

My mate came off his CG this morning at red hill roundabout,
Is today cursed? It's not even Friday 13th yet!


Saying that, i've seen more diesel and rainbow patches on the road today than in my whole history of biking (6 months Laughing )

I blame this fucking torch bullshit coming through leicester, traffics a cunt and everythings being diverted so some twat with big ears can run by holding a stick

I missed that bit... I'm assuming he means, if there's no choice and a hazard suddenly appears and you HAVE to brake, rather than braking into every corner Laughing

My method; before you enter a corner you should be at the right speed and right gear, all your braking should be complete before you start the maneuver

indicators, mirrors, life saver etc.

Lower throttle coming into the turn and high throttle coming out, no brakes, no changing of gear whilst doing it, well not changing down anyway, changing up you can get away with

Right?
I lost some traction turning like that and leaning as I went over a drain cover on a wet road, but keeping the power on kept me going


I gotta ask, if motorbiking is so dangerous why do they cover the roads with super slippy drain clovers and high gloss paint?! There are better materials, there are drain covers with tarmac on them... If I was to go over because of a drain cover in the middle of the damn lane I doubt I could claim Rolling Eyes Wink

those rainbow splodges of diesel in the road are not actually that slippery - ever ran your foot over them ?

alot of people tend to panic when they see them, slow down mid corner, which makes things even worse

the next time you see one in the road and you are walking, go and test how slippery they actually are !

you only need a 1ml of diesel to make a rainbow splodge the size of about 100 cm2

I just avoid them as I don't want the shit on my tyres, rather than slipping on the little patch itself.

Cant be any worse than just a wet road really, I practice slamming on brakes in the rain fairly often as it's good to get a feel for these things. and it's fun Laughing

Eh there's this part of my ride on the way home, you can take the corner fast but there's traffic lights shortly after. You either have to take the corner at the speed limit or not much over or start braking whilst you're in the corner before you exit it. Smile (linky).

Also, before the van. Wink That was just a huge failure on my part where I locked up both brakes after leaving my braking too late and panicked. Sad

Still don't really get what locking the brakes is, is it jsut stopping the wheel from moving? Surely that's what brakes do o.O

Not like you have to get off and 'unlock' them so I don't see how it's not just "Braking so hard you skid?"

My one's always empty, you can pin the throttle coming off the roundabout before and be up to nice speeds by the time you have to brake. Smile

It's a figure of speech. So yes, it's braking so hard that you skid.

Braking smoothly and properly slows the wheel down, "locking them" suddenly stops the wheel (like locking it in place) so rather than slowing down you simply skid. You do sort of have to "unlock" them, but this is achieved by releasing the brakes, stopping skidding and applying the brakes again.

Unfortunately my accident was braking in a straight line. Because I locked the wheels up before the corner, I carried on in a straight line rather than attempting the corner. I was just unfortunate in the fact there was a van coming around the corner which I went in to.

a gs500 has user friendly brakes to be honest

i front brake on the KTM whilst going into the corner if i know the tyres are warm, however, by mid corner you should be well off the brakes and only be on the rear to adjust your speed a little (not really needed on a large single)
