Hi,
My ER5 failed its MOT today because the drivechain was worn to excess. I just wondered how you can tell this and how much you would expect to pay for a new one?
It also failed on the nearside front fork, as the seal was leaking oil, how much would you expect to pay for this?

He quoted me £60 for the fork, £100 for the drivechain or £150 for both...is this about right?

Cheers,
Glyn

Sounds like a good deal.

Drive chains show wear by being able to move them side to side. The way chains are designed they are only able to flex in one plane. If the chain flexes too much horizontally then it is worn.

Also you can look at the sprockets and see if they are worn just by glancing at the teeth.

Sounds about right to me, chain and sprocket kit @60-70 pounds, fork oil seal and dust cover kit @15-20 pounds plus labour so certainly not out of the way @150 pounds.

Is that both seals? You want them changed at the same time. You also want chain and sprockets. If both seals and sprockets are in the price then go for it. Good deal.

And on the plus side, you should get a free resit and a full MOT at the end of the day Thumbs Up

How do you get a free resit for an MOT? never heard of that, I know there is a reduced fee if the MOT date is set within 3 weeks of the previous failure but its not free, I have always had to pay upfront when applying for a retest.

Every garage i have had a MOT fail (car or bike) if they do the work you get a free resit. I thought that was the norm.

I get my test done in an MOT centre which is government run so have to pay upfront, They do not do any work to the car or bike as such and must be presented fit for an MOT prior to testing.

I travel ~10 miles to my MOT station.

They passed a bike I built practically from a bag of parts... They'll pass anything Laughing

You must know someone to get a bag of parts passed my local MOT centre happens to be the place for the trainees, there are 2 teams the A and the B team. The B team are the trainess who fail pretty much anything so its pot luck on which testers you get really or which test line you get.

Guy at our 'local' MOT place (which actually happens to be about 10 miles away) always says that front brake pads are worn, even when they are new.

regarding the Free MOT thing. The deal with it all is: if it fails the MOT and it get's repaired within 24 hours and returned to the same MOT station it can get the MOT again.
Mine failed for it's euro headlamp so it was failed. We then put tape over the lamp to stop it blinding to the right and then it was put through again to pass

I've never paid for a retest.

I specifically ask how long I have for a free retest when I book.

No free retest within a reasonable period (10-14 days is the usual response I get) = no booking.

Chain/sprockets - £80, fork seals £30 for genuine. so £110, plus 40 fitting.

I assume he is only doing the chain though, so knock that price in half honestly.

Another thing to note with ER5s is you really should change the bushes if the seals are being done.
