well my CBT is this Friday!

the good people at SEMT have had me in twice prior to my cbt to get some practice doing slow riding, clutch control, left and right hand turns oh and emergency stops (in the rain i might add, brilliant for learning the stops in and really glad it was wet that day but hope its dry on friday)

they've got me in again Wednesday to get some gear change practice.

all at no extra expense!

so now with the CBT date closing in im suddenly rather nervous! just wondering what peoples last minute recommendations / tips are?

the school instructors are really good, know they're stuff and its guaranteed pass but would really like to crack it out in one.

i did feel a little..."ooo errr" hitting the 10mph mark but i think that's because the riding area is literally the length of the course which consists of 2 corners and 2 straights with the slalom and 8 down the middle. so i think the speed wariness was more due to being very aware of how short the distance is because of fences on either end.

also i did find i was quite happy looking in the mirrors and tried using my knees to grip the tank and immediately noticed as i griped the tank my hands eased in grip on the bars and steering became alot easier.

clutch control around corners doesn't seem to be any problem.

At no extra cost? Shocked I'd have liked that!

sorry, i meant that they've had me in at the school without charging me for the practice. the CBT is costing £110 (plus bus fair of £2.90 lol) so they're really good chaps.

i havent actually paid for the CBT yet as its pay on the day, so goes to show how pro-bike these fellas are and extremely helpful

sidewinder: yeah, im really impressed with them, and thanks i think im going to need it.

WOW! Just WOW! They've given you 2 lessons before your CBT for nothing... awesome. The CBT pricing seems normal, the extra 2 lessons isn't AFAIK.

Have fun, sounds like you've found an excellent training school.

they do this with alot of thier students,

one lady has her tests booked in in august and she goes in once a week for practice lessons.

another guy who has been having his after me twice now.

they're really dedicated and i personally cant rate them highly enough. They know how to have a laugh as well, nothing more amusing than an instructor standing aside you slapping the front brake lever saying "bad brake, naughty brake".

How are they making any money if they're giving everyone free lessons? Confused

Surely you know by now that the CBT is training, not a test. You don't have to prepare yourself for it - the CBT course is the preparation. Confused

I guess some free lessons will increase their pass rates (or keep them high) which makes them look good which brings in more students.

Eminently sensible I think.

Give someone a good experience doing a CBT., give then an hour or
two of free lessons, and they will more than likely return to do the
more profitable DAS course Very Happy

The same reason some places do the free 'get on' taster session.
The likelihood is they will get a customer from it.

kernow: i'll be using SEMT for my full license too

alpha: well you dont HAVE to have a CBT to talk about bikes.

Your cbt is intended to be your first experience on a bike, teaching you the basics of control so your able to be safe on the road. Hence the "basic training" I just don't understand the idea of the lessons before hand. Wouldn't that in effect become the "basic training"? Lessons after if needed I totally understand. If you have had some training before your basic training your probably going to end up skipping through parts anyway as you will already know them so i can't see much of a benefit to be honest. However, seeing as their free there's no loss Smile

The point in having a go on a bike before doing your CBT is that it reduces the risk of 'not passing' the CBT and wasting £100+

Nothing wrong with that if it came at no extra price Rolling Eyes
Enjoy it and relax, all will be well.
Don't forget to cancel those indicators!

How can you "not pass" basic training? I was unaware there was any testing in place

If you can get some extra basic training FOR FREE before you do your CBT then great. It'll mean you've have sorted the clutch, gears, slow control basics beforehand. Your CBT on the day should just be a formality, as long as you have basic road sense, you can focus on the road without worrying about basic control.

Also Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Thumbs Up SEMT Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

Sounds like a great school, to be recommended

jetski wrote:

You don't "not pass", they'll just ask you to come back again later, either without taking you on the road or just taking you out for an hour instead of two, if you don't look confident at what you're doing in the car park.

3 free practice lessons,

each session was approx 20 to 30 minutes.

while it didnt cost me anything (especially as i still havent paid for the CBT as its pay on the day) it helps my instructor out because he's also the one doing my CBT. so it helps him to know my (and the other riders) ability and riding skill, it also lets him know how fast we learn and so he can base the CBT schedule around that.

like the "bike controls" section of the CBT. well, thats already been covered so he wont need to go over it in as much detail. same with pulling off, left hand, right hand turns, stopping and gear changes. which all in all gets his learners onto the road a little earlier in the day or allows them to do the procedures as more practice ect.

so all in all it benefits everyone involved.
